Reading Royals News Release

Reading, PA - The Reading Royals (8-5-1=17, t-1st North Division) of the ECHL scored 1:57 into the game on the team's first power play of the night, but couldn't duplicate that feat over the next sixty or so minutes of hockey and lost to the Trenton Devils in overtime, 2-1, at the Sovereign Center in Reading, Pennsylvania. For the second time in two match-ups between these two teams, the Royals significantly outshot the Devils (32-20), but Trenton was able to make the most of their opportunities to get their second win of the year against the Royals. Similarly, for the second time this year, the Devils' David Caruso (3-2-0; 31/32) out-dueled Reading's Jon Quick (7-5-1; 18/20) for the win.

Reading opened the scoring 1:57 into the game, while playing with the man advantage for the first time in the game. The power play unit worked the puck to the left point where Patrik Hersley, playing in his first game for Reading after being assigned this week from the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League, ripped his first shot as a Royal behind Caruso for his first goal in North America. Trenton tied the game at the 6:21 mark of the first on their second power play chance of the evening. Reading had picked up overlapping penalties to give the Devils 1:34 worth of a five-on-three skater advantage. Just as the two skater advantage expired, Trenton's Stephen Wood took a shot from the right point that appeared to deflect off a Royal and into the upper left corner of the goal, tying the game at one. For the next fifty-five minutes of regulation and into overtime, the two teams played a smart, albeit conservative, give-and-take game with limited scoring chances at either end of the ice. 2:05 into the OT, Trenton broke the tie while the teams were playing three aside due to matching minors assessed against Bracken Kearns of the Royals and Trevor Kell of the Devils. After a sequence of odd man rushes in either direction, Trenton got the puck into Reading's defensive zone and pressured to create a scramble around the Royals' net. After a shot by Wood went wide, the puck ricocheted off the end wall and slid to the mid slot, where Tony Zancanaro settled, turned and fired a low shot that slipped through traffic out front and into the Royals goal low to Quick's glove side, handing Reading the team's first OTL of the season.

The Royals have the weekend off and do not play again until Wednesday, November 21, when Reading will face Trenton again-this time at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. Game time is 7:00 pm, and the game night broadcast will begin at 6:30 pm with the pre-game warm-up show on ESPN Radio 1240 am in Ephrata, as well as on the internet through the Royals' website, www.royalshockey.com. Streaming video is available on a pay per view basis through the B2 Networks.
