July 13, 2023 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Green Bay Rockers News Release
Ashwaubenon, Wis.- The Rockers lost the first game of a four-game homestand to the Madison Mallards 6-5. This meeting was the first between these two teams in Ashwaubenon of the season as the Mallards broke the 2-2 series tie so far this season.
For the second straight game, Green Bay fell just short of making a comeback as they scored the final three runs of this ball game across the seventh and eighth innings. Relief arm Jax Traeger (TCU) was able to keep the Rockers at bay, allowing zero earned runs and only allowing one hit.
Starting on the mound for the Rockers was Brett Sanchez (Belhaven). Sanchez suffered his first loss of the season after allowing four earned runs. He would strike out six batters along the way.
The Rockers opened scoring this game in the bottom of the second inning. Third baseman Jayson Jones (Arkansas) hit an RBI single to center field to score Jojo Jackson (Georgia State) to give Green Bay the 1-0 lead.
The Mallards would take the lead one frame later, as designated hitter Owen Jackson (Toledo) hit his first home run of the game. The two-run homer would also score Madison third baseman Ryan Sprock (Elon), who put together a multi-hit performance.
Green Bay would tie the game in the bottom of the third inning. Recently named all-star Carlos Hernandez (Anderson) hit an RBI single to score shortstop Cooper Kelly (Kansas) to even the game at two apiece.
In the top of the fifth and seventh innings, the Mallards would get four more runs that all came in on Jackson's home runs. The designated hitter launched a total of three home runs over the right field wall of Capital Credit Union Park tonight, totaling six RBIs in the game. His offensive efforts would give Madison a 6-2 lead headed into the seventh-inning stretch.
Kendal Ewell (Kentucky) would begin the late-inning comeback for the Rockers when he skied a sac fly to deep center field, which scored catcher Nainoa Cardinez (Hawaii).
One inning later, the Rockers would get two more runs when Mateo Matthews (Wagner) drew a bases-loaded walk before Jack Holman (UCLA) hit a sac fly. These would be the final runs scored as Mallards held on to win 6-5.
With the loss, the Rockers are now 4-7 in the second half and have fallen into last place in the Great Lakes West.
Up next for the Rockers is the second game of the four-game homestand which will also feature the Madison Mallards. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
