TONIGHT'S MATCHUP: The Ontario Reign and Henderson Silver Knights square off in the second of eight total meetings this season, the first of four in Henderson at Lee's Family Forum. Since suffering a 2-0 shutout loss vs. the Silver Knights on Oct. 19 the Reign have won three consecutive games while Henderson has won four straight contests.
LAST TIME OUT: Ontario picked up their third consecutive victory on Sunday defeating Abbotsford 5-2 for the second straight contest. After falling behind 1-0 midway through the first period the Reign struck with four unanswered goals courtesy of Cole Guttman, Taylor Ward, Samuel Bolduc, and Francesco Pinelli taking a 4-1 lead into the second intermission. The Canucks made it a two-goal game just 2:41 into the third period before Jared Wright scored on an empty-net with 28 seconds left to cap off the win. Erik Portillo made 13 saves in the victory while the Reign outshot the Canucks 31-15.
HEAD-TO-HEAD: The Silver Knights shutout the Reign in the only meeting of the season to date by a final score of 2-0 back in Ontario on Oct. 17. Tanner Lacynski gave Henderson a 1-0 lead 70 seconds into the third period and then with 70 seconds left in regulation Raphael Lavoie potted a five-on-three power-play goal. Carl Lindbom made 18 saves in the win while Erik Portillo made 23 saves in the loss. Henderson outshot Ontario 25-18 as the Silver Knights went 1-for-5 on the power-play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
BETWEEN TWO PIPES: For Ontario, Erik Portillo has started five of the first six games and has allowed just two goals against in each of his last four starts making 78 saves on 86 shots. Pheonix Copley made his season debut last Friday making 24 saves in a 5-2 win at Abbotsford while Portillo made 13 saves in a 5-2 win Sunday. For Henderson, Carl Lindbom who shutout the Reign on Oct. 18, he made his NHL debut his NHL debut on Sunday making 26 saves in a 2-1 shootout loss at Tampa Bay. Cameron Whitehead was reassigned by Vegas from Tahoe to Henderson last Wednesday and made 37 saves in a 5-2 win vs. San Diego on Saturday. Jesper Vikman had started three of the first five games with Lindbom getting the nod in the other two contests. Jordan Papirny was recalled by Tahoe yesterday.
PLAYERS TO WATCH: For the Reign, Glenn Gawdin is on a three-game point streak (1-3-4) and picked up his 300th career AHL point last Friday. Taylor Ward has three goals in his last two games along with two assists and notched his 100th career AHL point on Sunday. Samuel Bolduc has a point in three straight games (3-1-4) including two power-play goals. For the Silver Knights, Tanner Laczynski has a point in five of six games and a four-game point streak (2-3-5) while Raphael Lavoie has three goals in his last five contests and Braeden Bowman has three goals over his last three games.
GONE STREAKING: During Ontario's three-game win streak they have outscored their opponents 13-6. They've scored a power-play goal in all three contests going 4-for-16 while surrendering two power-play goals against on nine short-handed deficits. The Reign have outscored their opponents 3-1 in the second period during the win streak and 6-2 in the third period. Henderson has won four straight games where they have outscored their opposition 14-7.
DEFENSIVE SHUTDOWN: The Reign have allowed just two goals against in each of their last five games after allowing five back on Oct. 10 in a 5-4 overtime loss vs. Tucson to open the season. They are eighth in the AHL allowing just 2.50 goals-against per game and their three goals allowed in the second period are the second fewest given up in the middle frame this year by any team in the league.
POWER-PLAY STRIKES: Ontario has scored a power-play goal in five of their first six games as Martin Chromiak and Samuel Bolduc are tied for the team lead with two power-play scores. Bolduc's two-man advantage goals are tied for first among league defenders. He had six power-play goals last season in 69 games with Bridgeport and heading into the season the Laval, QC native had nine power-play tallies in 211 games over the last five seasons for Bridgeport. Joe Hicketts, Andre Lee, and Taylor Ward are tied for the team lead with two power-play assists each.
