Memphis Redbirds News Release

MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds won a pair of games at the Gwinnett Stripers (Triple-A affiliate, Atlanta Braves) on Thursday night, taking both halves of a doubleheader. The 'Birds bounced back from losing the series opener on Wednesday, upping their season record to 9-12 against the Stripers.

Game one of the doubleheader was an absolute roller-coaster. In a seven-inning game that took three hours and 25 minutes to complete, the Redbirds outlasted the Stripers by a 9-6 final. The highlight of the first game of the doubleheader was remarkable hitting by Memphis. The 'Birds rapped out 13 hits, with their big guns stealing the show. Nolan Gorman went 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and two runs scored, while Juan Yepez continued his remarkable recent success with a 3-for-4 performance. He drove in three runs and scored twice, adding a double to his huge stat line.

Conner Capel also added a multi-hit game (three hits) in the first half of the doubleheader, while Nick Plummer scored three runs as well. He's scored nine runs in his first nine games in Triple-A.

The second game of the doubleheader was the complete opposite of the first game. It was a pitcher's duel, as Memphis (50-55) took down Gwinnett (59-46) by a 3-2 final in a contest that took just over two hours to finish. The Redbirds got some timely hitting, powered again by Yepez. He launched a two-run home run in the top of the first. Yepez is batting a phenomenal .490 (24-49) over his last 13 games with 20 runs driven in and 14 extra-base hits.

Scott Hurst provided the winning blow, untying a 2-2 game in the sixth with a solo home run. It's his fourth homer of the season and his second in his last five games.

Given just enough run support, the Redbirds pitching staff did the rest. Austin Warner (four innings, two runs), Jacob Bosiokovic (two innings, zero runs) and Tommy Parsons (one inning, zero runs) combined to strike out 11 Stripers batters while allowing only four hits and two walks.

Bosiokovic and Parsons had starring roles out of the bullpen. In his Triple-A debut, Bosiokovic allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out four batters. Parsons earned the save with a 1-2-3 seventh inning, continuing an impressive streak of work out of the bullpen. Since moving to the bullpen on August 21, the righthander has tossed 6.0 scoreless innings in five outings with 12 strikeouts. Parsons has allowed exactly one baserunner since becoming a reliever.

The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
