Bisons Beat RailRiders Again, Take over First Place

September 2, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release

The Bisons took over sole possession of first place in the Northeast division with a third straight victory over the RailRiders, 5-3, Thursday night from PNC Field in Moosic, PA. Zach Logue worked five masterful innings and the Bisons never trailed in the leapfrogging Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for the top spot with 17 regular season games to go.

Thursday evening was Logue's twelfth start this season, but his first against the RailRiders. The southpaw wasn't afraid of the powerful opposing lineup and instead attacked early in counts. The strategy paid off for the left-hander, who allowed no runs and just three hits. Logue had great command of his pitches, racking up five strikeouts while not allowing a single walk.

With the two teams locked in a scoreless tie to start the top of the 5th, Kellin Deglan grabbed the momentum for Buffalo, hitting a double to lead off the inning. Deglan then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Logan Warmoth, but a throwing error allowed the speedster to be safe at first base. The error proved to be costly for Scranton Wilkes-Barre as Deglan scored after Otto Lopez hit a sacrifice fly deep to center field, and the Herd took a 1-0 lead.

Still holding their one-run lead thanks to the Buffalo bullpen, the Bisons came into the top of the 8th looking for insurance runs. Lopez led off the inning this time for Buffalo, hustling out an infield single to give the Herd a baserunner. Tyler White then worked a walk, putting runners on first and second for the club. Looking to move both runners into scoring position, Richard Urena laid down a sacrifice bunt with two strikes. The bunt stayed fair and the RailRiders committed yet another throwing error, allowing Lopez to score from second base.

With White and Urena still on base, the Herd knew they could continue to add to their lead. Cullen Large flew out to right field, and White tagged up from third base to score another run for the Bisons. It was then Christian Colon who broke the game wide open. With Urena still on base, Colon hit a home run over the left-field wall, scoring two more runs. Buffalo scored four total runs in the inning, expanding their lead over Scranton Wilkes-Barre to five runs.

The insurance runs proved to be important for the Bisons because the RailRiders didn't go down without a fight. The opposing club scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th, making the Buffalo bullpen earn the win. With their fourth consecutive win, the Herd now have sole possession of first place in the Triple-A East Northeast division.

Scranton Wilkes-Barre has been known for their ability to produce runs. Scoring 541 runs throughout the season so far, the RailRiders have had one of the league's best offenses. However, the Bisons haven't had an issue with the opposing club's lineup so far.

Through the first three games of the series, Scranton Wilkes-Barre has scored just four runs. The club's first run was scored in game one of the series on Tuesday, coming in the bottom of the second inning. The RailRiders' scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th in Thursday night's contest, ending Buffalo's streak of 20.0 consecutive shutout innings.

The Bisons (60-41) and RailRiders (59-42) play the fifth game of the series on Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Casey Lawrence is expected to start on the mound for Buffalo.
