RailRiders Fall into Hole, Lose 5-3
September 2, 2021 - International League (IL)
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
MOOSIC, Pa. - A furious ninth-inning comeback fell just short as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders fell to the Buffalo Bisons 5-3 on Thursday night at PNC Field.
Gleyber Torres was 1-for-3 at the plate and was hit by a pitch while playing in the third game of his MLB rehab assignment while playing all nine innings at shortstop.
Matt Krook turned in a strong start for the RailRiders, allowing only one run in 5.1 innings of work, striking out five and walking three. The lone tally against him came home in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Otto Lopez.
Buffalo pulled away with four runs in the top of the eighth, all unearned against the ledger of Nick Nelson, to take a 5-0 lead.
The RailRiders offense struggled against Buffalo starter Zach Logue, who limited them to three hits in 5.0 innings. Those would be the only three hits of the game for the RailRiders, as Logue along with three Bisons relievers combined to retire 12 straight Scranton/Wilkes-Barre hitters at one point.
In the bottom of the ninth Fitz Stadler hit Torres with a pitch, and Greg Allen followed with a triple to score pinch-runner Matt Pita. Three batters later, Rob Brantly brought Allen home with a sac fly to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Trey Amburgey scored Ryan LaMarre with a broken bat single to right to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Jacob Barnes got Jonathan Davis to ground out to third to end the game.
The RailRiders have now lost five straight games for the first time this season, and have fallen a game behind the Bisons for first place in Triple-A East Northeast Division. SWB has scored just three runs in the first three games of this series.
The RailRiders continue their series with the Bisons on Friday night at PNC Field. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. RHP Luis Gil (4-0, 5.23) gets the start for SWB, while Buffalo counters with RHP Casey Lawrence (4-2, 6.00).
