Reading Fightin Phils News Release

Reading, PA -- The Phillies sent 29 batters to the plate in the fourth and fifth innings Monday afternoon and went on to pound the New Britain Rock Cats 21-4 in the Eastern League. The runs were the most scored by a Phillies team since May 27, 1991, here against New Britain, a 22-2 spanking.

The Phillies (41-42) set season highs for runs in a game, runs in an inning (13), hits (21) and extra-base hits (9).

Jesus Merchan, 9-for-15 in the three games vs. the Rock Cats, led the way with four hits, including two doubles, four runs scored and three RBIs, while jacking his batting average to .357. Javon Moran, Mike Costanzo and Peeter Ramos -- he's 7-for-9 with two homers in two games -- had three hits, Costanzo doubling twice. Five other players had two hits apiece, including Greg Jacobs, who blasted his 13th home run.

For the third straight game in the series the Phillies fell behind early. Back-to-back doubles by Merchan and Costanzo cut the deficit to 2-1 in the third. Then, as they did in the two previous games, the Phillies stitched together a big inning, getting a two-run triple from Mike Spidale, a two-run home run from Ramos, and a two-out, two-run single from Juan Tejeda.

It would get much, much worse for New Britain after that, the Phillies putting up a ridiculous 13 runs in the fifth inning to turns things into a laugher.

10-MILLION MARCH -- With a crowd Monday of 6,898, the Phillies need to draw 559 more fans to become the first Double-A ballclub to reach 10 million in attendance. Club officials predicted they would reach that mark Tuesday.

THE STARS ARE OUT: Five Phillies were named to the Eastern League midseason All-Star Game, which will be played July 11 at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Conn. Playing for the Southern Division and representing the Phillies will be pitcher Matt Maloney, catcher Jason Hill, third baseman Mike Costanzo, infielder Jesus Merchan and outfielder Greg Jacobs.
