Connecticut Defenders News Release
It took him nine starts, but Garrett Broshuis finally nailed down his second win of the 2007 season. Though it didn't appear as though it would be the case in the early going, Broshuis was the beneficiary of some Defenders offense in the middle innings and he pitched strongly as the game moved along to help the team to a 5-4 victory.
Broshuis made just two mistakes early in the game, but they both proved costly. He surrendered a solo blast to C Robinson Cancel, deep over the left field wall and into the trees in the top of the third inning. His next mistake came on a 1-0 pitch to OF Brett Harper that he parked over the right field wall for a 2-run HR and the Mets led 3-0 entering the bottom of the third.
But the Defenders responded in the bottom of the frame and pushed 2 runs across. OF John Bowker and 1B Tyler Von Schell led reached on a walk and a single. Both runners came around to score on a botched double play ground ball off the bat of C Steve Holm. Holm received credit for a run driven in and cut the lead to 3-2.
Things unraveled for Mets starter Kevin Mulvey in the bottom of the sixth inning as he reached three ball counts to three of the first four batters he faced in the inning. Von Schell hit an RBI single and 3B Simon Klink hit a sacrifice fly to plate 1 runs and give Broshuis the lead 4-3. The team would not look back. They added another run in the bottom of the eighth off an RBI double by OF Carlos Sosa and headed into the ninth a head 5-3. Brian Anderson allowed a double to the leadoff batter Harper, but proceeded to retire the next three batters in order to hold on to the win and give Garrett Broshuis a long overdue victory.
Kevin Mulvey (L, 6-8) took the loss after tossing 6 innings, surrendering 4 runs (3 earned), 6 hits, 4 walks, and striking out 4 batters. Garrett Broshuis (W, 2-9) notched his second win of the season after pitching 7 innings, giving up 3 runs, 5 hits, and striking out 3 batters without allowing a single walk. Brian Anderson (S, 17) picked up his seventeenth save of 2007 after a scoreless ninth inning, allowing just 1 hit and striking out a batter. Tyler Von Schell went 3 for 4 with an RBI and 3 runs scored and Carlos Sosa went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a walk in the victory. The Defenders look to make it two in a row and split the series with the Mets on Tuesday July 3 at 7:05 p.m.
