PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the Major League Baseball Advanced Media selections for the Eastern League Pitcher and Player of the Week for the week ending July 1st:

Altoona Curve first baseman Steven Pearce has been named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending July 1st. Pearce, a native of Lakeland, Florida, had an outstanding week for the Curve, batting .500 (12-for-24) with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, four runs scored, three walks and a .850 slugging percentage in seven games. The 24-year old had at least one hit in every game he played in last week, including four multiple hit games, to raise his batting average to .330, which is currently ranked fifth in the league. The 5'11", 200 lb. slugger currently leads the league in slugging percentage (.606) and OPS (1.002) and is tied for fifth in RBI (50) despite spending the first month of the season with the Single-A Lynchburg Hillcats, where he hit 11 homers in 19 games. Steven was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 8th round of the 2005 draft after blasting 42 homers in two seasons at the University of South Carolina.

Clay Buchholz, a right-handed starting pitcher for the Portland Sea Dogs, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending July 1st. The 22-year old made a pair of starts for the Sea Dogs last week and was 1-0 with a 0.79 ERA. In his first appearance of the week Buchholz struck out 11 batters and walked one while giving up one run on four hits in 6.1 innings of work to earn a victory in Portland's 5-4 win at New Hampshire last Monday. The 6'3", 190 lb. hurler also faced New Hampshire in his second start of the week, this time at Hadlock Field, and he did not allow a hit in five innings while striking out four and walking two in a no-decision on Saturday night. The Lumberton, Texas native currently leads the league in ERA (1.69), strikeouts (115) and WHIP (0.87). Clay, who went 4-1 with a 1.59 ERA in June, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the sandwich round of the 2005 draft out of Lumberton High School in Texas.
