Steven Pearce Named E.L. Player Of The Week

Altoona Curve first baseman Steven Pearce today was named the Eastern League's Player of the Week for the week ending July 1. Pearce had an outstanding week for the Curve, batting .500 (12-for-24) with two doubles, two home runs, nine RBI, four runs scored and an .850 slugging percentage in seven games.

The 24-year old had at least one hit in all seven games during the week, including four multiple-hit games, to raise his average to .330, which ranks fifth entering Monday's action. The 5-foot-11-inch, 200 lb. slugger currently leads the Eastern League in slugging percentage (.606), OPS (1.002) and is tied for fifth in RBI (50) despite spending the first month of the season with the Class-A Lynchburg Hillcats, where he hit 11 home runs in 19 games.

In 58 games with the Curve, Pearce is hitting .330 with 19 doubles, 11 home runs, 50 RBI and 37 runs scored. Including his numbers with Class-A Lynchburg to open the season, the Lakeland, FL native enters Monday ranked third among all minor league hitters in both home runs (22) and RBI (74).

Pearce was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the eighth round of the 2005 June Draft out of the University of South Carolina and is currently in his third professional season.

The Altoona Curve will continue their eight-game homestand at Blair County Ballpark on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Bowie Baysox (Orioles).
