
Reading Phillies Announce Plans for Thrilling Tuesday, August 31

(Reading, PA) - On Tuesday, August 31, the Reading Phillies are set to close out the month of August on a high note, as the team has a special day planned for all who attend the 7:05 p.m. contest. The night is highlighted by the Reading Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, and also includes an R-Phils All-Decade Team T-Shirt giveaway to the first 2,500 adults, courtesy of Texstyles Screen Printing and Embroidery, an All-Decade Team Celebration, a pre-game and post-game concert from Pangea Acoustic on the Classic Café stage, Baseball Bingo, and more.
Food court gates open at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, and Pangea Acoustic will take the Classic Café stage for an exciting 90-minute concert (5:00 - 6:30 p.m.). Fans 21 and older can enjoy Happy Hour with $1.00 off select beers (5:00 - 6:00 p.m.).
On Tuesday, FirstEnergy Stadium will once again serve as the site for the 2010 Reading Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, thanks to the Reading Eagle, 830 AM WEEU, and 69 News Berks Edition. This year's inductees include former R-Phils GM and President Chuck Domino, who is currently the Chief Executive Manager of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs and Richmond Flying Squirrels, former R-Phils starting pitcher Andy Ashby, former R-Phils reliever Toby Borland, former Reading Indians 1B Hal Jones, and Reading baseball pioneer Henry "Ted" Larkin. Domino, Borland, and Ashby are scheduled to appear during the induction ceremony.
Bios for all five inductees are listed below:
Chuck Domino - Reading Phillies General Manager, 1987-2006, and President, 2007-09
Domino oversaw the transformation of the Reading Phillies franchise into one of the top organizations in baseball. During his time in Baseballtown, the R-Phils led the Eastern League in attendance 10 times and eclipsed its own franchise record 15 times. He was honored as Eastern League Executive of the Year four times and Minor League Baseball Executive of the Year in 1998. In 2002, he founded and became president of Baseballtown Charities.
Andy Ashby - Reading Phillies pitcher, 1990
Ashby, a right-handed pitcher, was 10-7 with a 3.42 ERA for 1990 R-Phils. He notched 98 Major League victories, winning 10 or more games on four occasions, and earned two All-Star appearances in a 14-year career. The Missouri native led the National League with three shutouts for San Diego in 1999, but enjoyed his best year in 1998, going 17-9 with a 3.34 ERA and five complete games for pennant-winning Padres.
Toby Borland - Reading Phillies pitcher, 1990-93, 1998
Borland, a side-winding right-hander, led the Eastern League and set Reading franchise record for saves in a season with 24 in 1991. Borland, a native of Louisiana, also led the league with 59 appearances and was 8-3 with a 2.70 ERA. In parts of four seasons with the R-Phils, he compiled a 15-11 mark with a 3.12 ERA, 32 saves and 156 strikeouts in 153 innings. He posted an 11-9 mark with eight saves in a nine-year Major League career.
Hal Jones - Reading Indians first baseman, 1960
His 34 home runs for the '60 Reading Indians broke Rocky Colavito's single-season record and stood as the Reading franchise record for 43 seasons. Jones also led the Eastern League with 107 runs scored and a .595 slugging percentage. He ranked in the league's top ten in batting average (.299), doubles (30), RBIs (104) and walks (75).
Henry "Ted" Larkin - Reading Actives outfielder, 1883
Larkin, a Reading native, started his career with Reading of the Interstate Association in the first season of professional baseball in this city. He played 10 seasons at the Major League level, twice leading his circuit in doubles and ranking in the top 10 in RBIs six times and home runs four times. He was a career .303 batter who hit for the cycle for Philadelphia of the American Association in 1885.
Also on Tuesday, the R-Phils are set to hold an R-Phils All-Decade Team Celebration, thanks to 830 AM WEEU, and the first 2,500 adults who come out to the game will receive an R-Phils All-Decade Team T-Shirt, courtesy of Texstyles Screen Printing and Embroidery. The stylish shirt features the names of all ten members of the All-Decade Team. Also, as with every Tuesday home game, all fans can play Baseball Bingo, courtesy of Maidencreek Banquet Hall, for a chance to win some great R-Phils prizes.
Tuesday's contest will also mark the fifth Genesis HealthCare Assisted Living Communities R-Phils Senior Club game, with $3.00 off for all Senior Club members, plus a pre-game question and answer session from 5:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m., thanks to Genesis HealthCare Assisted Living Communities. Senior Club members can enter via the Ryan Howard Batting Tunnel Entrance, which will allow them to skip the lines, be the first to get their giveaway items, and then proceed to the Pool Picnic Area for their pre-game chat session. Tuesday's chat session will feature a very special Q & A session with R-Phils GM Scott Hunsicker, who will give fans a sneak peek into the upcoming FirstEnergy Stadium renovations.
The R-Phils return home for their final homestand of 2010 on Thursday, August 26.
