Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels erased a 4-1 Reading Phillies lead, only to fall to the R-Phils, 6-4, in 10 innings in front of 7,370 on Monday night at The Diamond.

After being caught in the eighth, the R-Phils rallied for two runs and the win against right-hander Rafael Cova in the 10th inning. Cova walked Kevin Mahar with one out in the inning, and a batter later, Freddy Galvis lofted a triple to right field to provide the game-winning run. Galvis also scored on the play, when Ryan Lormand's relay throw to third was wild up the left-field line. Cova (0-5) was tagged with the loss in relief as the Squirrels fell to 6-7 in extra-innings.

Harold Garcia singled on the first pitch of the ballgame from Squirrels' right-hander Mike MacDonald. Two batters later, Tagg Bozied singled him home for a 1-0 Reading lead.

Richmond answered quickly in the bottom of the inning as Lormand cued a double just fair up the first-base line off of R-Phils' lefty Yohan Flande. Conor Gillaspie followed with a replicate double to the opposite line, scoring Lormand to tie the game, 1-1.

Reading was back at it in the third inning, as Timo Perez ignited a rally with a one-out single. Michael Spidale followed with a single and Bozied loaded the bases with a third consecutive single. Mahar bounced out to first base, with Perez scoring on the play to give the R-Phils the lead back. With two outs, Cody Overbeck singled to right-center field to plate two more runs, and extend the Reading lead to 4-1.

Once again, the Squirrels would respond, scratching across two runs in the fourth inning to pull within a run, 4-3. Thomas Neal singled off Flande to start the inning and was replaced on the bases by Clay Timpner, who bounced into a fielder's choice. Eliezer Zambrano singled to put two aboard and the pair advanced on a wild pitch. Sharlon Schoop delivered both runs with a two-run single back through the middle.

Flande lasted five innings on the night, conceding three runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out one as he registered a no-decision.

MacDonald called it a night after six innings, settling in after conceding four runs on nine hits early in the ballgame. He didn't factor in the decision as he walked one and struck out one.

The Squirrels finally pulled even in the eighth inning, tying the game with a run against Chance Chapman. Schoop contributed his third RBI of the ballgame, sending a single to right field to score Timpner.

Left-hander Sergio Escalona (3-8) earned the win after working a perfect ninth inning, while Justin De Fratus earned his fifth save with a scoreless 10th.

Game two of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Tuesday night at The Diamond. LHP Clayton Tanner (8-8, 3.38) will make the start for Richmond against RHP J.C. Ramirez (3-3, 5.18) for Reading.
