Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Harrisburg, PA)- Nate Spears and Anthony Rizzo have been two of the Sea Dogs' hottest hitters as of late, and both continued that on Monday night. Spears had two home runs and six RBI, while Rizzo drove in three, as Portland opened up a three-game series with a 10-5 win over the Harrisburg Senators.
After tying Sunday's game with a homer in the tenth, Nate Spears picked up right where he left off on Monday. Jose Iglesias led off the contest with a single, and Spears immediately knocked him in with a two-run shot to right field.
One inning later, Spears and the Sea Dogs did it again. With one out, Matt Sheely and Jose Iglesias connected on consecutive singles, setting the table for Spears. The Portland second baseman took a 2-0 pitch, and drilled it to right field for his third home run in as many plate appearances.
Chris Marrero put the Senators on the board with a solo blast in the bottom of the second, but the visitors came back with three more runs in the fourth. Juan Carlos Linares led off the frame with his first hit as a Sea Dog, reaching on an infield single. After Matt Sheely struck out, Jose Iglesias picked up his third straight single. Three batters later, Anthony Rizzo stepped to the plate, and cranked a bases loaded double to center field, bringing in all three runs. For Rizzo, the hit gave him 29 RBI in the month of August - a new franchise record for any month.
Nate Spears drove in his sixth run of the game in the fifth, as his two-out single plated Matt Sheely with the ninth Portland run of the evening.
Harrisburg scored twice in the fifth, once in the seventh, and once in the ninth, but the damage was done, as the Sea Dogs cruised to a 10-5 victory. Ryan Lavarnway added the icing on the cake with a solo shot in the eighth.
Blake Maxwell (5-0) earned the win for Portland, tossing five innings, allowing three runs, six hits, and three walks, while striking out one. Aaron Thompson (4-13) was the losing pitcher for Harrisburg, lasting three and two-thirds innings, allowing eight runs, nine hits, and three walks, while striking out four.
The Sea Dogs and Senators will play the middle game of their three-game series on Tuesday night at 7:00. Kyle Weiland (5-7, 4.61) will make the start for Portland, while Tom Milone (10-5, 2.87) will get the call for Harrisburg.
