New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Trenton, NJ- Kyle Drabek worked seven scoreless innings, improving to 14-9, and Eric Thamesbelted his team-leading 25th home run, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, in the Fisher Cats 6-0 win at Trenton on Monday night.
With the win, New Hampshire (73-54) closed to within two-and-a-half games of first place Trenton (76-52). The teams will play the next two nights with an Eastern Division title, and home field advantage in the playoffs, at stake.
New Hampshire scored its first runs in the top of the third inning against starter and losing pitcher Manny Banuelos (0-1), who was called up from Advaned-A Tampa to make his first start for Trenton. Matt Liuzza singled and was bunted to second by Jonathan Diaz. After Darin Mastroianni was retired on a fly out, Adeiny Hechavarria singled to make it 1-0. Thames followed with his 25th home run to make it 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Diaz doubled and Mastroianni reached on a bunt single. Diaz was gunned down at the plate trying to score as Mastroianni moved to second. Mastroianni then established a new franchise record by stealing his 43rd base and he scored on an Hechvarria ground out to make it 4-0.
David Cooper drew a two-out walk in the sixth ahead of Adam Loewen's13th homer, a shot to right field which made it 6-0.
For Drabek, his 14th win is the second-most in one season by a New Hampshire pitcher---trailing only Gustavo Chacin--who went 16-2 in the 2004 E.L. Championship season. Drabek allowed only two hits---a lead-off single in the first by Justin Christian and a single by Austin Krum in the sixth. He walked three and struck out a season-high nine batters.
Danny Farquhar finished up working two scoreless innings with one strikeout. The Fisher Cats continue the three-game series against the Trenton Thunder at Waterfront Park on Tuesday night at 7:05pm. New Hampshire right-hander Zach Stewart (8-3, 3.81) is scheduled to get the start against Trenton right-hander Dellin Betances, who will be making his Eastern League debut. Fisher Cats Pre-Game begins at 6:45pm with Dave Collins on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network.
When New Hampshire returns home on Thursday night to play the Portland Sea Dogs, it will be Goodwill Night. It will also be another rendition of Citizens Bank Kids Run The Show and an Atlas Fireworks Show will follow the game. For tickets and information, call (603) 641-2005 or visit www.nhfishercats.com.
