Rampage Fall To Stars In Overtime, 6-5

CEDAR PARK, Texas - The San Antonio Rampage scored four times within a five minute span in the third period to come from behind and eventually send the game to overtime, however they were unable to hold on falling to the Texas Stars 6-5 in overtime at Cedar Park Center. The Rampage gain a point in the standings and now have 73 points on a 35-23-3-0 record.

Just 17 seconds after the initial faceoff, Stars left wing Brandon Segal gave Texas a 1-0 lead when he tapped in the puck from the top of the crease to beat Rampage netminder Matt Climie glove side. Mathieu Tousignant's pass from the left faceoff circle earned him the primary assist on the play.

The Stars extended their lead at the 2:43 mark of the opening frame on a goal by Raymond Sawada. Jordie Benn's shot from the point, in front of the Rampage bench, was redirected in front of the net over the left leg pad of Climie to extend the Stars lead to 2-0.

Fortunus and Sawada teamed up again 3:27 later on a similar play with a shot by Fortunus from the point at the right wing wall that was redirected by Sawada in front over Climie and into the back of the net to give the Stars a 3-0 lead.

Rampage head coach Ray Edwards opted to pull Climie in favor of Joe Fallon after the Stars tallied three goals within the first 6:10 of regulation.

The Stars extended their lead to 4-0 at the 12:53 mark of the first period on Cody Chupp's fifth goal of the season. Luke Gazdic skated the puck into the Rampage zone along the left wall and passed to Chupp at the top of the left faceoff circle. Chupp then skated the puck into the slot before firing a shot that beat Fallon inside the right post.

Tempers flared in a heated second period between the in-state rivals as the Rampage and Stars combined for 43 penalty minutes in the second period alone. The heat carried over into the third period as both teams combined for 29 penalty minutes within the first five minutes of the period. However the momentum seemed to shift in favor of the Rampage as the team recorded four goals within a five-minute span to tie the game.

Rampage right wing Viktor Tikhonov scored at the 4:10 mark of the third period when he gained possession of the puck at the left half wall and skated into the left circle before firing a shot that beat Richard Bachman high glove side. Garrett Stafford picked up the assist on Tikhonov's power-play goal.

Nearly two and a half minutes later, Tikhonov and Stafford teamed up again and assisted on a goal by Alex Picard at the 6:42 mark to cut the deficit in half, 4-2. Tikhonov's pass from the right wall deflected off of Stafford's skate and into the slot where Picard was positioned to turn around and fire a shot past Bachman.

Just over a minute later former Texas Stars forward Matt Beaudoin scored on the same power play to bring the Rampage within one. Ned Lukacevic skated into the right circle where he fired a shot that was deflected off of Bachman's right leg and into the slot directly to Beaudoin who was able to punch it in to the open net. Randy Robitaille provided the additional helper.

The Rampage tied the game at 4-4 on Bracken Kearn's 14th goal of the season at the 9:28 mark of the third stanza. Rampage left wing Dane Byers picked up his first point with the Rampage assisting Kearns on the play when he sent a pass from the left wall to Kearns in the slot and beat Bachman.

With 3:34 remaining in regulation Rampage defenseman Jonas Ahnelov netted the go-ahead-goal and his second score of the season. Tikhonov sent a backhanded pass from the slot out to Ahnelov at the blue line, Ahnelov then took a few strides toward the net before firing a shot that beat Bachman high stick side. Picard was credited with the second assist

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Colton Sceviour skated the puck around the back of the Rampage net and passed to Aaron Gagnon who fired a shot from the top left corner of the crease that beat Fallon high glove side to tie the game at 5-5 with 19 seconds remaining in regulation.

Just over a minute into overtime, Rampage defenseman Jeff May was assessed a double minor for high sticking that gave the Stars a four-on-three advantage and at the 2:01 mark Texas forward Greg Rallo netted the game-winning goal to seal the Stars victory at 6-5.

The Rampage return home tomorrow night to host the Syracuse Crunch at 7 p.m. at the AT&T Center.
