March 4, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Charlotte Checkers 4-2 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in front of 7,556 fans. The P-Bruins received two goals from Trent Whitfield and additional strikes from Alain Goulet and Stefan Chaput.
Providence opened up the period strong offensively, with Whitfield, Colby Cohen and David Laliberte testing Charlotte net-minder Mike Murphy with scoring opportunities. After successfully killing two penalties, the P-Bruins capitalized a minute into their own man-advantage when Maxime Sauvé dropped the puck in the slot for Whitfield, who then beat Murphy top-shelf at 15:34 of the first. Laliberte also assisted on the play. In a physical second half of the frame, Providence killed their third penalty of the game, but Charlotte was able to get on the board with just 33 seconds to play in the period off a nifty behind the back pass from Jacob Mickflikier to Riley Nash, who beat Anton Khudobin five-hole.
The P-Bruins continued to drive to the net in the second frame, nearly taking a 2-1 lead halfway through the frame when Jordan LaVallee-Smotherman took a shot from the left circle that bounced along the goal-line behind Murphy before rolling out. Despite the scoring opportunities, Charlotte got on the board at 11:17 of the second to take a 2-1 advantage. The lead was short-lived as Whitfield lit the lamp for the second time with a beautiful slap-shot from the right circle that sailed over Murphy's shoulder. LaVallee-Smotherman also assisted on the goal. The P-Bruins capitalized on their third power play of the game to take a 3-2 lead at the 13:21 mark. Jamie Arniel found Goulet at the point, who drilled a shot past a screened Murphy for his first goal of the season in Providence. Whitfield also assisted on the goal, tallying his third point of the game. A couple of key saves by Khudobin at the end of the frame sent the P-Bruins into the locker room leading 3-2.
Providence got on the board early into the final frame with Chaput scoring his first goal in a P-Bruins sweater. After winning the face-off back to the defense in the Checkers' zone, Cohen took a shot from the point and Chaput collected the rebound to give the P-Bruins an insurance goal just 2:39 into the frame. David Ling also assisted on the goal. Great saves by Khudobin and a solid penalty kill kept the Checkers off the board and the P-Bruins went on for the 4-2 win.
Khudobin earned the win, his first as a P-Bruin, stopping 25 of 27 shots. The win was his 20th of his AHL season. Murphy suffered the loss, blocking 25 shots. Providence went 2-for-3 on the power play and a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill.
After a rare Saturday off, the P-Bruins are back in action on Sunday, hosting Bridgeport on at 4:05 p.m. for Kids Hat Night. To purchase tickets or for more information, call the P-Bruins ticket office at 401-273-5000 or log on to the team website at www.providencebruins.com.
