Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders pounded out 14 hits and defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs 10-3 on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the top of the second to set the tone early. RBI singles by Kyle Holder and Cristian Perez were punctuated by a Trey Amburgey two-run double in the frame against David Parkinson (1-10).
Armando Alvarez extended the RailRiders lead with a three-run double in the fourth. The two-base hit was Alvarez's team-leading 22nd of the season, and gave SWB an 8-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Holder connected for a solo home run off Enyel De Los Santos to grow the advantage to 9-1. It was his first home run of the season and part of a 3-for-5 showing at the plate. Holder also scored three runs and picked up two RBIs.
The RailRiders got a strong start from Clarke Schmidt in his second Triple-A outing, allowing one run on five hits in 3.0 innings, striking out five and walking one. Adam Warren (4-3) and Nick Green turned in scoreless innings of relief, but Nick Nelson allowed a pair of runs in the seventh as Lehigh Valley closed the gap to 9-3.
SWB added an extra insurance run in the top of the ninth on a Greg Allen RBI single, and Braden Bristo tossed a scoreless ninth inning to close out the 10-3 triumph.
All 10 players who batted in the game for the RailRiders collected a hit, and nine of them either scored a run or drove in a run. By virtue of the win and a loss by the Buffalo Bisons, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has moved back into sole possession of first place in Triple-A East Northeast. The RailRiders record stands at 20 games above the .500 mark for the first time since the end of play on August 5.
The RailRiders continue their series with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage on the RailRiders Baseball Network beginning at 6:45. LHP Matt Krook (2-4, 5.15) takes the mound for SWB, while Lehigh Valley has not announced a starter.
SWB returns home to PNC Field on August 31 to begin a series with the Buffalo Bisons. For tickets and more information, call (570) 969-BALL or slide to www.swbrailriders.com/tickets.
