Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The Omaha Storm Chasers took Game 1 of a doubleheader, 8-6, in eight innings behind four RBIs from shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. before dropping Game 2 of the twin bill, 8-1, to the Iowa Cubs on Tuesday at Principal Park. Omaha (52-44) owns a 13-12 record through 25 games this season against Iowa (42-55).

GAME 1

Witt Jr. smacked a three-run homer in the third inning against left-hander Ryan Kellogg to put the Storm Chasers in front early. It was Witt Jr.'s 10th home run at the Triple-A level and his 26th this season, a mark that ranks third in all of Minor League Baseball.

Left-hander Foster Griffin allowed one unearned run in 4.0 innings with four strikeouts and zero walks. He allowed the lone run in the bottom of the third, when Trent Giambrone reached on an error, moved to third on a single, and scored on a double steal.

Omaha extended its lead with three runs on four hits in the fourth inning. Outfielder Kyle Isbel tripled to begin the inning and scored on a single by infielder Erick Mejia. Three batters later, an infield single by outfielder Dairon Blanco put runners on the corners for Witt Jr., who singled up the middle to drive in his fourth run of the game.

Iowa tied the game with five runs in the fifth inning. After right-hander Jace Vines loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch, he issued a bases-loaded walk to force in the first run of the inning. Following a pitching change, right-hander Jake Newberry allowed a two-run single to Nick Martini before giving up a two-run double to Alfonso Rivas.

The Storm Chasers retook the lead in extra innings. After a single and a walk loaded the bases, Mejia singled to the left side to bring in the placed runner, shortstop Adalberto Mondesi. First baseman Nick Pratto, who singled earlier in the inning, scored on a sacrifice fly by infielder Lucius Fox.

Right-hander Dylan Coleman (Win, 3-0) struck out three in 2.0 scoreless innings to secure the win.

GAME 2

Outfielder Rudy Martin homered on the first pitch of the game from right-hander Matt Swarmer (Win, 3-6) for his fifth home run at the Triple-A level and his 10th home run of the season overall to give Omaha an early 1-0 lead over Iowa.

The I-Cubs responded in the second inning against right-hander Brandon Barker (Loss, 1-2), scoring three runs on four hits to take the lead. Caleb Knight began the scoring with a two-run homer to left. Next, after Ian Miller singled and stole second, Greg Deichmann hit a pop-up to left field that fell between Martin and Witt Jr. for an RBI double.

Iowa added a run in the third on a solo home run by Jared Young before rounding out the scoring with a four-run fifth inning. Young drove in Martini from second base with an RBI single, and then scored along with Rivas when Giambrone smacked a three-run homer against right-hander Collin Snider.

The Storm Chasers continue their series against the Iowa Cubs at Principal Park in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday, when right-hander Jakob Junis (0-2, 7.43) faces Iowa right-hander Joe Biagini (2-6, 5.43). First pitch is scheduled for 6:38 p.m. CT coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. CT with the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone.
