Railers Come up Empty in 4-0 Home Loss to Monarchs

WORCESTER, MA - The Worcester Railers HC (11-12-3-0, 25pts) had a tough go offensively in a 4-0 loss to the visiting Manchester Monarchs (12-10-1-1, 26pts) in front of 2,812 fans at the DCU Center on Friday evening. The Railers host the Maine Mariners on a BIG GAME SATURDAY at 7pm on Teddy Bear Toss Night as Worcester will wear a special UGLY SWEATER JERSEY to benefit the Shine Initiative presented by Fidelity Bank.

The Railers were shutout for the second time this season while Mitch Gillam had his 13-game home game winning streak snapped in the loss. Charles Williams made 37 saves for Manchester while Nic Pierog scored twice to give Manchester a 4-1-0-0 record on their six-game road trip.

Neither team found the back of the net in a rather quiet first period that saw no penalties and few whistles. Mitch Gillam had 10 saves through 20 minutes while Charles Williams had nine stops for the Monarchs.

Manchester scored three goals on 13 shots in the second period to grab a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes of play. Nic Pierog (12th) finished off a 2-on-1 rush at 7:44 to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Matt Marcinew (8th) buried a feed from behind the net point blank past Mitch Gillam at 11:20 to put the Railers down 2-0. Michael Doherty (3rd) found a bouncing rebound at the side of the net assisted by Matt Marcinew to put Worcester down 3-0. Shots were 13-11 in favor of Manchester in the second period.

Nic Pierog (13th) put the game away in the third period with his second goal of the night at 14:58 to give Manchester the 4-0 lead. Charles Williams made 16 mores saves for his first shutout of the season as Manchester grabbed the 4-0 road victory.

Charles Williams (5-2-1) made 37 saves on 37 shots for Manchester.... Mitch Gillam (6-7-0) made 23 saves on 27 shots for Worcester.... while Evan Buitenhuis served as the backup.... Worcester went 0-for-0 on the power play while Manchester went 0-for-0.... Tommy Kelley (inj), Tyler Mueller (inj), Kyle McKenzie (inj), Ivan Kosorenkov, Dylan Willick, and Malcolm Gould (inj) did not dress for Worcester.... Jeff Kubiak is currently on recall with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers...Worcester falls to 7-4-3-0 at home this season.... Eric Cairns from the NY Islanders was in attendance....Josh Holmstrom picked up his second fighting major of the season after a quick 2ndperiod scrap with Michael Doherty....the game featured no minor penalties and no power plays.....Connor Doherty and Ryan Hitchcock had a game high six shots on goal.

On Saturday, Dec 15 the Railers host the Maine Mariners on Teddy Bear Toss Night on a BIG GAME SATURDAY. Worcester will wear a special UGLY SWEATER jersey to benefit the Shine Initiative presented by Fidelity Bank. Fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear to throw on the ice after the Railers score their first goal of the game with all teddy bears donated to local charities. The ugly sweater jerseys will be auctioned off throughout the game to benefit the Shine Initiative. Every Saturday night home game is SATURDAY NIGHT SIGNINGSpresented by MidState Auto Group with a Railers player signing autographs during the second intermission.
