Pitcher's Duel Ends with Bats Loss, 3-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Louisville Bats began a seven-game road trip with a 3-1 loss to the Syracuse Chiefs Monday night at NBT Bank Stadium.

In his 98th career minor league start, right hander Robert Stephenson (3-3, 3.47) threw a six inning masterpiece, giving up zero runs on five hits and striking out five batters. Stephenson hurled 89 pitches, 60 for strikes.

The Bats got the games first run in the seventh inning when pinch-hitter Jermaine Curtis's infield single scored Brandon Allen, who led off the inning with a double.

In the bottom half, the Chiefs scored three runs on two singles and took a 3-1 lead. Matt Magill was charged with the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning. Lefty Wandy Peralta allowed the final Chiefs run in the seventh. Right-hander J.J. Hoover pitched a perfect eighth with two strikeouts.

Chiefs right hander Taylor Hill (3-4, 4.92)notched the win after he threw seven innings, gave up one run on six hits and struck out two.

Despite the losing effort, Seth Mejias-Brean extended his hitting streak to nine games, tying his most since he had a nine game streak with Double-A Pensacola, ranging from July 2-July 10, 2015.

The Bats and Chiefs will play the second of four games tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. Right hander Keyvius Sampson (2-1, 1.67) will take the mound for the Bats and oppose Chiefs right hander Austin Voth (3-2, 2.83).
