Pawtucket Edges Toledo in Series Opener
June 6, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
The Mud Hens were defeated by the Red Sox 2-1 Monday night at McCoy Stadium despite another dazzling Daniel Norris outing and a JaCoby Jones home run.
Pawtucket got on the board in the first inning after Justin Maxwell worked a two-out walk and came around to score making it 1-0 after back-to-back singles off the bats of Chris Marrero and Chris Dominguez.
Toledo tied it 1-1 in the top of the third when JaCoby Jones said hello to the International League with a towering solo shot to left field in his second ever at-bat as a Mud Hen.
The Red Sox's Anthony Varvaro, who earned his third win of the season, came on in the sixth to get Henry Owen out of a two-out jam and secure the 1-1 score. Owen, the smooth southpaw starter for Pawtucket, went 5.2 innings scattering five hits while only allowing one run and striking out six.
Daniel Norris had been on cruise control, retiring 13 consecutive batters, before allowing a leadoff walk and a sharp single to left off the bat of Ryan LaMarre. Two batters later and it was 2-1, as Dominguez knocked in his second run of the game, this time courtesy of a sac fly to center.
Preston Guilmet was summoned from the Hen Pen in the seventh, replacing Norris who finished with three strikeouts and four walks while allowing just three hits and two runs in six innings of work. Guilmet, after allowing back-to-back singles to start the seventh buckled down and wiggled his way out of the jam thanks to a brilliant backhand play by Casey McGehee at third.
The two runs proved to be enough, as Pat Light closed it out in the ninth for his fourth save of the season and a Pawtucket victory. Toledo's Logan Kensing also made an appearance out of the bullpen to pitch a perfect eighth inning.
Toledo Tidbits:
Dominant Daniel- Daniel Norris came into Monday's game against Pawtucket by winning his previous three and striking out a combined 24 batters. The strikeouts were down Monday night but Norris retired 13 straight between the first and sixth innings.
Well Hello JaCoby- JaCoby Jones made his first IL AAA appearance Monday night with the Toledo Mud Hens, as Lloyd McClendon slotted him in as the number two-hole hitter and centerfielder, and Jones didn't disappoint, blasting a solo home run in the third inning and showing off his power. The former LSU Tiger had only appeared in 20 games for the Erie SeaWolves in AA because of 50 game MLB suspension for his second violation of the drug prevention program, but the number eight prospect in the Tigers organization was hitting .312 with 4 home runs and 20 RBIs.
Oh No, Not the North- Toledo began a 20 game stretch in which they will face off with an opponent from the IL North. Currently, the Mud Hens are 4-9 vs the North thus far in 2016, and Toledo went 1-6 in 2015 against Pawtucket.
