Berrios Buries Bisons' Win Streak
June 6, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
Casey Kotchman hit his fourth and fifth homeruns of the year in Monday's loss to Rochester.
With first place in the International League North on the line, Jose Berrios delivered a top-notch performance for the Red Wings.
Just ten days after his 22nd birthday, Rochester's young stud punched out a season-high 11 batters, allowing just three hits to earn his fourth win in a 6-2 victory against Buffalo at Frontier Field Monday night.
Berrios faced the minimum through four innings before giving up a solo homerun to Casey Kotchman to begin the fifth, making it a 4-1 contest. Buffalo's designated hitter was a thorn in the side of Berrios, as he belted a nearly-identical blast over the wall down the right-field line again in the seventh.
The two homers were the only runs allowed by Berrios over eight rather efficient innings. The native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico made way for J.T. Chargois in the ninth having tossed 93 pitches.
After hurling five consecutive quality starts, Drew Hutchison was touched up for four runs, three of which were earned, over five innings of work. The 6-foot-3 righty struck out seven but allowed nine hits in the loss -- the most he'd issued since April 18th.
Hutchison hadn't given up more than five hits in any of his last six starts.
Eddie Rosario was the first Rochester batter to reach home after he singled to start the second inning. Rosario was chauffeured home three batters later on a sac fly by Adam Walker.
The Red Wings used a pair of singles, a ground-rule double and another sacrifice fly to plate two more runs in the third.
They then scored their unearned run off of Hutchison as Walker led off the fourth inning on an Andy Burns throwing error. Buffalo's third baseman made a great backhanded stab as he moved into foul territory but then airmailed his hurried throw over the head of Jesus Montero at first. Walker touched home three pitches later on John Ryan Murphy's single into right field.
Chad Jenkins came on in the sixth and was also tagged with a run. In his fourth game as a Red Wing, Logan Shafer hit his second homerun with the club to put Rochester up 5-1.
The Wings capped the scoring with a couple of doubles off of Bo Schultz to score their sixth run of the night in the bottom of the seventh.
Rochester's victory snaps the Herd's five-game win streak and extends the Red Wings' division lead over the Bisons to a game and a half.
BISONS NOTES:
Dalton Pompey extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single in the first inning...Three of Casey Kotchman's five homeruns have come against Rochester... Logan Schafer's homerun was just the first surrendered by Chad Jenkins this season...The Herd is now 3-6 against Rochester in 2016.
