
International League Names Players of the Week

The International League announced today that Indianapolis center fielder Danny Ortiz and Durham pitcher Blake Snell have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week for the period from May 30-ÂJune 5.  Ortiz is the third member of the Indians to claim an IL weekly award in 2016, following Josh Bell (April 18-Â24) and Tyler Glasnow (April 25-ÂMay 1), while Snell is the second Durham player to be so honored, joining Richie Shaffer (April 7-Â10).  Both Ortiz and Snell are among the players fans can currently vote for online to send to the 2016 Triple-ÂA All-ÂStar Game by visiting milb.com/vote.Â
DANNY ORTIZ, Indianapolis Indians IL BATTER OF THE WEEK
Danny Ortiz led the International League last week with a .476 batting average and a .857 slugging percentage.  Five of his ten hits went for extra bases, including three doubles, a triple, and his team- leading seventh home run on the season.  The triple and long ball came as part of a 4-ÂRBI effort in the Tribe's wild 16-Â11, 13-Âinning-Âvictory in Toledo on Friday.  In six games this week, Ortiz raised his season's average from .253 to .281 while moving up to 5th  in the League in slugging percentage (.485).Â
The Indians are now alone in 2nd  place in the IL West, just 2.5 games behind division-Âleading Columbus.
26-Âyear-Âold Danny Ortiz is in his first season in the Pittsburgh organization after spending the first eight years of his career in the Minnesota farm system.  He played over 200 games with the Rochester Red Wings between 2014-Â15 before signing with the Pirates this past November as a free agent.  Ortiz is a native of Caguas, Puerto Rico.
BLAKE SNELL, Durham Bulls IL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Left-Âhander Blake Snell didn't allow a run in 11.0 innings pitched this week, limiting opponents to a total of eight hits while striking out a League-Âbest 14 hitters.  He didn't receive a decision in Tuesday's matchup against Scranton/Wilkes-ÂBarre, as despite surrendering just three hits in 5.0 scoreless innings, the Bulls fell 2-Â0.  Sunday evening against Gwinnett, Snell matched his season-Âhigh with nine punchouts as Durham cruised to a 9-Â0 shutout of the Braves.  Snell's third victory of the season came as he raised his League-Âleading strikeout total to 77.  He also leads the circuit in strikeout ratio, averaging 12.09 strikeouts per nine innings. Â
23-Âyear-Âold Blake Snell is in his first full season at the Triple-ÂA level.  He started nine games for Durham in 2015 on his way to being honored by Baseball America and USA Today as the Minor League Player of the Year.  He's also a two-Âtime Tampa Bay organization Minor League Pitcher of the Year.  Snell is a native of Seattle, Washington.
