Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
MAMA SAID: The RailRiders lost a rain-shortened, 4-1 decision to the Columbus Clippers (32-24) on Sunday afternoon at PNC Field. The game was declared final in the seventh after persistent rains made field conditions unplayable.
FIVE ALIVE: The RailRiders committed a season-worst five errors, one off the franchise record. The then-Red Barons made six errors in a game twice in 1997. Those tough days came May 17 at Syracuse and July 4 versus Rochester. The 1997 SWB squad went 66-76 and tied Norfolk for the IL's worst fielding percentage (.971). The 2016 RailRiders entered Sunday with a league-low 31 errors and an IL-best .985 fielding percentage. All five of the errors came on the infield: one at first, short and third; and two by second baseman Donovan Solano. He is the only RailRider with multiple miscues in a single game this season. That also happened May 12 versus Pawtucket.
FIRST TIME IN A LONG TIME: The RailRiders took two of three versus the Clippers at PNC Field last August. That made for the SWB franchise's first series win over Columbus in NEPA since the last Red Barons swept Dave Miley's Clippers in a four-game set from April 18-21, 2006. The RailRiders dropped three of four on the 2016 series between the clubs in NEPA. They will meet again in a three-game series at Columbus from June 10-12.
THEY HAVE OUR NUMBER: SWB and Columbus split the 2015 series, 3-3, with four of the games decided by one run. Eighteen of the last 35 clashes between the clubs have come down to a single score with Columbus taking 11 of the close calls. The RailRiders have lost 20 of the last 25 meetings with 12 one-run finals.
@THE_HIGSTER: Kyle Higashioka bashed a double in the fourth inning and had a pair of hard outs on a 1-for-3 day. "Higgy" entered 2016 as a .233 career hitter before slashing .286/.338/.437/.775 in 34 games as Double-A Trenton's primary catcher to start the year. After going 0-for-4 in his first 2016 Triple-A game, he has hit safely in six straight, going 8-for-22 (.364), 2-2B, 2HR, 4RBI, 5R.
INTERNATIONAL (LEAGUE) MAN OF MYSTERY: The RailRiders received Tyler Austin from Double-A Trenton Saturday. He spent most of 2015 with SWB (73GP, .235/.309/.311/.620), usually playing right field. Mostly a first baseman this year at Double-A, in 50 games he slashed .260/.367/.395/.762 with a team-high 29 RBIs while ranking second on the club in doubles (10). He launched a homer in his first 2016 Triple-A plate appearance Saturday and finished 1-for-3, BB, SB. He drove in the RailRiders' lone run yesterday on a first-inning single and finished 2-for-3, 2B.
THE COKE SIDE OF LIFE: Phil Coke (3-1) took the loss, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits over four-plus frames. The RailRiders had been 4-0 when he pitched before Sunday. In 21.2 Triple-A innings this year, he has allowed two earned runs (0.83 ERA), 14 hits (.171 BAA) and owns 21K against 5BBB (4.2:1 K:BB ratio; 0.88 WHIP). Earlier today, the New York Yankees placed him on the disabled list.
KNIGHTED: From 2005-13, SWB did not lose the season series to Charlotte at home or overall, going 45-26 overall and 25-12 in NEPA. That has changed with a 5-10 overall mark and 2-5 home record versus the Knights between 2014 (2-6, 1-3) and 2015 (3-4, 1-2).
