Pigs Blank Braves in Rain-Shortened Game
June 6, 2016 - International League (IL1)
Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
In a game that was called in the bottom of the seventh inning due to rain and wet field conditions, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (31-26) blanked the Gwinnett Braves, 3-0 on Monday night at Coolray Field in Gwinnett.
RHP Ben Lively (2-0) got the win for the Pigs as he allowed two hits while walking three and fanning six over six plus shutout innings.
The Pigs grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the third as Darnell Sweeney drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a sac bunt and scored on J.P. Crawford's RBI double.
Darin Ruf (2-3, HR, RBI, 2 R) led off the top of the fourth with a single, advanced to second on an error charged to Gwinnett CF Jace Peterson, went to third on a groundout and scored on Cedric Hunter's RBI single to give the IronPigs a 2-0 lead.
Gwinnett had runners at the corners with one out in the home half of the frame, but Lively was able to fan Matt Tuiasosopo and get Blake Lalli to ground out and end the inning.
Braves starter Lucas Harrell (2-1) gave up the two runs (one earned) on four hits while walking three and fanning four in 5.0 IP.
Ruf's solo shot off of LHP Matt Marksberry (1.0 IP, 3 H, R ER, 2 K) in the top of the sixth opened up a 3-0 advantage for Lehigh Valley. The home run was Ruf's sixth of the season.
The series continues on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as LHP James Russell (1-1, 1.16) gets the ball for the Pigs against Gwinnett LHP Manny Banuelos (0-0, 3.86).
