Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (20-34) were swept in a doubleheader by the Rochester Red Wings (29-23) on Wednesday night, dropping game one by a score of 7-4 and game two by a 3-2 score.
Game One
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs dropped a 7-4 decision to the Rochester Red Wings in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday night.
The Red Wings took the lead for good in the top of the fifth with runners at the corners and one out as Pigs starter Joely Rodriguez struck out Oswaldo Arcia but a wild pitch allowed James Beresford to score from third and give the visitors a 5-4 lead. Danny Ortiz followed with an RBI double off the wall in right to extend the lead to 6-4.
Rodriguez (2-5) was tagged with the loss as he allowed six runs on nine hits while walking a pair and fanning three over 4.2 IP.
The Pigs took an early 1-0 lead in the home half of the first as Brian Bogusevic (3-4, R) and Domonic Brown (2-4, RBI) both reached via one-out singles before Jordan Danks plated the former with an RBI single later in the inning.
Rochester took the lead with four runs in the top of the third against Rodriguez as Arcia and Argenis Diaz each delivered a two-run single in the inning to give the Wings a 4-1 lead.
In the home half of the fourth, Lehigh Valley tied it at four apiece with three runs in the inning. Tyler Henson drew a leadoff walk, moved to third on a Chris McGuiness (1-3, 2B, R) double and scored on Gabriel Lino's RBI single to cut the lead to 4-2. Cord Phelps grounded into a double play, which allowed McGuiness to score to bring the Pigs within 4-3. Chase d'Arnaud followed Phelps by reaching on a two-out single, Bogusevic reached on an error and Brown plated d'Arnaud with an RBI single of his own to tie things at four apiece.
Two of the three runs in the inning were earned and were charged to Red Wings starter Jason Wheeler who got a no-decision after giving up a total of four runs (three earned) to go along with a walk and two strikeouts over 3.2 innings of work.
The RBI single by Lino-who was making his IronPigs and Triple-A debut-marked his first career Triple-A hit and RBI.
LHP Caleb Thielbar (1.1 IP, H, K) had a scoreless outing out of the Wings' bullpen to earn the win and improve his record to 3-2 on the season. RHP A.J. Achter (1.0 IP, K) retired the side in order in the seventh to pick up his eighth save.
The Red Wings extended the lead to 7-4 in the top of the seventh courtesy of Ortiz's RBI single off of LHP Cesar Jimenez (1.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER).
RHP Hector Neris (1.1 IP, H, BB, 2 K) notched a scoreless outing in relief for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
Game Two
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs fell to the Rochester Red Wings by a score of 3-2 in the nightcap of a doubleheader on Wednesday.
Rochester took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Ortiz got aboard with a one-out double, moved to third on a fielder's choice and scored on Ryan Wheeler's RBI single.
The IronPigs got that run back in the home half of the same frame to tie things at one as Danks doubled to center with one out, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch charged to Wings starter Lester Oliveros.
Brown (1-4, RBI) gave Lehigh Valley a 2-1 advantage in the third with an RBI single to drive home Jayson Nix who had singled earlier in the inning.
Oliveros (3-1) allowed two runs on five hits and fanned one over 3.2 IP. RHP Alex Meyer (2.1 IP, H, 2 BB, 5 K) came on in relief of Oliveros and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings for the Red Wings.
In the top of the fourth, the Red Wings regained the lead by a score of 3-2 after Josmil Pinto's two-run shot to left off of Pigs starter Phillippe Aumont. It was the sixth home run of the season for Pinto.
Aumont (2-3) was dealt the loss as he gave up three runs on eight hits to go along with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Pigs loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth against Meyer but Nix struck out looking to end the inning.
Achter (1.0 IP, H) retired the side in the seventh to notch his ninth save of the season.
RHP Dustin McGowan (1.0 IP, H) fired a scoreless frame for Lehigh Valley.
