Rochester Red Wings News Release

ALLENTOWN, PA - A.J. Achter recorded a save in both games as the Rochester Red Wings swept a doubleheader vs. the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Wednesday evening at Coca-Cola Park.

The doubleheader sweep for the Wings is the first this season after they split the previous five twin-bills.

Game One

Rochester and starter Jason Wheeler fell behind early as the IronPigs used a first-inning RBI single from Jordan Danks to take a 1-0 lead. Argenis Diaz gave the Red Wings their first lead with a two-run single in the third inning. Through three innings, Diaz had two hits on two pitches from the leadoff spot. Oswaldo Arcia also hit a two-run single in the third, his first hit with the Wings this season, to extend the lead to 4-1.

Wheeler ran into trouble and didn't make it out of the fourth inning as Lehigh Valley scored three runs in the frame. The left-hander departed with two on and two out on in a 4-3 game but a base hit by Dominic Brown off Caleb Thielbar (3-2) tied the game.

Rochester responded the next half inning as James Beresford bunted for a base hit, went to third on a Kennys Vargas single and scored on a wild pitch as Arcia struck out. Vargas would score on Danny Ortiz's RBI double, pushing the advantage to 6-4. Ortiz would add another RBI base hit in the seventh to cap the scoring.

Achter needed just eight pitches to toss a perfect seventh inning with a strikeout for his eighth save.

Box Score

Game Two

Lester Oliveros made a spot start for the Red Wings in the second game and gave his team a chance by surrendering two runs on five hits with one strikeout in 3.2 innings. After the IronPigs (20-34) took a 2-1 lead in the third inning, it took all of two batters for the Red Wings (29-23) take the lead. Vargas walked to start the fourth and Josmil Pinto followed with a two-run homer to put Rochester in front 3-2.

Alex Meyer (3-3) was cruising along in relief until the sixth inning. Meyer started the frame with two called strikeouts before two straight walks and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. In a nine-pitch at-bat with Jayson Nix, Meyer got another called strikeout to end the inning. Meyer has not yielded a run in three relief appearances since moving to the bullpen. He struck out five and walked two while allowing one hit in 2.1 innings.

Lehigh Valley pushed the tying run to second base against Achter in the seventh inning but the righty struck out Russ Canzler to end the game.
