Gwinnett Stripers News Release
NORFOLK, VA - An RBI single by Mycal Jones in the top of the eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the Gwinnett Braves (25-27) to a 2-1 extra-inning victory over the Norfolk Tides (30-23) Wednesday night in the second game of a doubleheader between the two teams at Harbor Park.
The G-Braves had taken the early lead in the nightcap in the top of the first when Eury Perez led off the game with a double to right field off of Tides' right-handed starter Tyler Wilson, moved to second on a fly out to center by Jose Peraza and scored on a single to left by Cedric Hunter for a 1-0 lead.
Norfolk knotted the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Baltimore Orioles' catcher Matt Wieters, who was on a Major League rehab assignment with the Tides, hit a first-pitch solo homer to right-center off of Gwinnett left-handed starter Greg Smith. The homer ended a fine run for Smith, who had retired the first nine batters of the game.
The scheduled seven-inning game moved to extra innings where Joe Benson led off the eighth with a single off of Norfolk right-handed reliever Pedro Beato (L, 3-2). Braden Schlehuber bunted Benson to second, and a balk moved Benson to third. That set the stage for Jones' game-winning hit.
The bottom of the eighth had plenty of drama, as the first two batters for the Tides reached base against Gwinnett right-handed reliever Aaron Kurcz (S, 7). However, Kurcz struck out Chris Parmelee and Nolan Reimold, and he got Dariel Alvarez to pop out to second to end the game.
In the first game, the Tides rode a 14-hit attack to whip Gwinnett 11-1 in seven innings. The Tides began that game with three runs in the first, three in the third and four in the fourth, all off of Gwinnett right-handed starter Chen-Ming Wang. The only Gwinnett run came in the top of the fifth when Wil Nieves doubled off the left-field wall to score Sean Kazmar from second. Kazmar had reached on a single and advanced to second on the play when Alvarez committed a fielding error in center field.
Wang (L, 2-5) pitched 3.0 innings with 11 hits and 10 earned runs. He also walked four. Right-hander Mitchell Boggs went 2.0 innings with two hits and one earned run. Righty Peter Moylan worked his first inning in a G-Braves uniform with 1.0 inning, one hit and two walks.
For the Tides, Baltimore righty Bud Norris, in a rehab start, pitched 4.0 innings with one walk and two strikeouts. Right-hander Michael Bowden went 1.0 inning with two hits, one unearned run and two strikeouts. Righty Steve Johnson (W, 2-1) went 2.0 inning with one hit, one walk and one strikeout.
In the nightcap, Smith pitched 4.0 innings with one hit, one run, and three strikeouts. Righty Kanekoa Texeira went 1.0 inning with one hit and one strikeout. Right-hander Ryan Kelly (W, 1-0) worked 2.0 innings with two hits, one walk and one strikeout. Kurcz pitched 1.0 inning with one walk and two strikeouts.
Kazmar led the G-Braves in game one, going 2-for-3 with a run. Nieves went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. In game two, Perez was 2-for-2 with a run, Hunter was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Jones was 1-for-2 with an RBI and Benson was 1-for-3 with a run.
For Norfolk in game one, Christian Walker was 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs, Rey Navarro was 3-for-4 with three runs, Alvarez was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and Wieters and Parmelee were each 2-for-3. In the second game, Wieters was 1-for-2 with a solo homer, while Alvarez and Audry Perez were each 1-for-3.
The G-Braves and Tides conclude the three-game series Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park. First pitch set for 12:05 p.m. Right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon (3-2, 3.58) will be on the mound for Gwinnett. The Tides will start righty Eddie Gamboa (3-3, 3.98). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 11:30 a.m.
