Louisville Bats News Release

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Louisville Bats (28-25) swept the Syracuse Chiefs (17-36) with a 4-2 win at NBT Bank Stadium on Wednesday.

Louisville opened the scoring for the second straight game as Steve Selsky gave the Bats a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third.

The Chiefs responded in the home-half of the frame, tying the game with a sacrifice fly and taking a 2-1 lead on an RBI double by Darin Mastroianni.

However, Syracuse gave up the lead with a throwing error in the top of the fourth that allowed Ryan LaMarre to score, tying the game at 2-2.

It remained a 2-2 game until the ninth inning as both starters settled in. Righty, Josh Smith (1-2), allowed two runs, both earned, on 10 hits and no walks with five strikeouts in six and two-thirds innings for Louisville.

Meanwhile, Syracuse right-hander, Bruce Billings (1-3), allowed two runs, one earned, on eight hits and one walk with two strikeouts.

The game spiraled out of control for the Chiefs in the top of the ninth as Louisville loaded the bases on a walk, a double and a hit batter in the ninth. Righy, Mitch Lively (L, 0-2, 2.56), then walked Jose Constanza, to give Louisville a 3-2 lead, and was promptly ejected after arguing the call on the fourth ball to Constanza.

Southpaw, Rich Hill, entered the game for Syracuse and plunked Jermaine Curtis with his first pitch to make it a 4-2 game.

The Chiefs stopped the bleeding at two runs, though, as Chris Dominguez was thrown out trying to score on a fly out by Eugenio Suarez to end the inning.

Righty, Drew Hayes (W, 3-1, 2.84), worked a perfect ninth inning to secure his third win of the season, shutting out the Chiefs in a hitless two innings with one walk and two strikeouts.

Josh Satin went 3-for-4 with a run scored in his first start since May 15, Suarez went 2-for-5 and Curtis went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI for Louisville.

Mastroianni and Caleb Ramsey both collected a pair of hits in the loss for Syracuse.

Louisville has won 15 of its last 20 games and the Chiefs have now lost 10 consecutive games. The sweep was Louisville's first-ever sweep of three games or more at Syracuse.

The Bats return to Louisville Slugger Field on Thursday, to take on the Buffalo Bisons in a four-game weekend series. Lefty, David Holmberg (3-3, 4.73) will take the mound for Louisville and right-hander Scott Copeland (3-1, 2.21) will toe the rubber for the Bisons.
