Norfolk Splits Doubleheader with Gwinnett

June 3, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Matt Wieters homered as part of a three-hit night, helping to lead Norfolk to a doubleheader split with the Gwinnett Braves Tuesday night at Harbor Park. Norfolk won game one, 11-1, while the Braves edged the Tides in extras in game two, 2-1.

Wieters had two hits, a walk and a run scored as he served as the catcher in the opener, then belted a solo homer as a designated hitter to account for Norfolk's lone run in the nightcap. His two singles in the opener came as a left-handed hitter, while his homer in game two was an opposite-field shot that came from the right-hand side.

The Tides set a season-high with 11 runs in the opening contest, getting multiple hits from five of the nine batters in the order. Christian Walker led the 14-hit attack with three hits and four RBI, as he singled in the first before doubling in runs in both the third and fourth frames. The four runs batted in by Walker were the most by a Tides player in a game this season.

Rey Navarro singled three times and scored three runs in the win, while Nolan Reimold added two RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored.

Making his third rehab start after being placed on Baltimore's disabled list after a bout with bronchitis, Bud Norris turned in a tremendous outing to help the Tides earn the win in game one. Norris retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced, walking one and striking out two while throwing 36 of his 57 pitches for strikes.

Steve Johnson (2-1) earned the win as he threw two shutout innings of relief.

In the nightcap, Gwinnett pushed across a run in the eighth inning to edge the Tides, 2-1.

Wieters' solo homer was the only run for Norfolk, as the Tides left seven men on base and went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position.

The Braves won the contest when Mycal Jones plated Joe Benson with a one-out single in the eighth. The run came against Pedro Beato (3-2), who came into the contest having registered a 0.87 ERA over his previous 14 outings.

Norfolk starter Tyler Wilson did not factor in the decision despite turning in a strong effort. Wilson allowed one run on five hits and matched his season-high with seven innings pitched, striking out four without walking a batter. Wilson, who threw 61 of his 92 pitches for strikes, lowered his ERA to 3.00 in nine starts with the Tides this season.

The two clubs will wrap up their three-game series Thursday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch slated for 12:05. Eddie Gamboa (3-3, 3.98) gets the start for Norfolk against right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon (3-2, 3.58).
