Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Albany Devils were able to ride the wave of a power play that struck three times on the man-advantage in defeating the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, 4-2, on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
The lone power play for either team in the first period resulted in the only goal during the opening twenty minutes of hockey. With Albany skating on the man-advantage, Reid Boucher gave his team a 1-0 edge at 8:16 when he settled down a pass from Adam Larsson and fired a snap shot from the right circle that beat Penguins goalie Matt Murray to the glove side.
The Devils headed to their second power play midway through the second frame and again were able to convert to pull ahead, 2-0. Mike Sislo walked in from the far wall of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton zone and zipped a wrist shot inside the left post at 12:29.
The Penguins had a chance to respond as they opened third period with a 5-on-4 advantage and needed only 36 seconds to get on board. Using captain Tom Kostopoulos as a screen, Conor Sheary sent a puck toward the front of the net that deflected off a stick and past the outstretched blocker of goaltender Scott Clemmensen. Kostopoulos and Jean-Sebastien Dea provided the assists on Sheary's seventh tally of the season.
With the game hanging in the balance in the final minutes of the third, Albany found the back of the net for a third time on the power play to retake the two-goal lead and go on top by a score of 3-1. Brandon Burlon's seeing-eye shot found its way under the arm of Murray with 3:25 left in regulation.
Just 15 seconds later, Derrick Pouliot floated a shot from the blueline that sneaked past an unsuspecting Clemmensen and the Penguins were back within one.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton would be unable to net the equalizer and former Penguin Paul Thompson clinched the win for the Devils, scoring into the empty net with 5.3 seconds left in regulation.
Murray's record falls to 5-5-2 as he stopped 23-of-26 shots. Clemmensen made 19 saves for Albany on 21 shots.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins travel up to Binghamton on Saturday, Dec. 20 to take on the Senators at 7:05 p.m.
