St. John's IceCaps News Release

Jason Jaffray recorded two goals and two assists and Ralfs Freibergs added his first two American Hockey League points as the St. John's IceCaps rallied to defeat the Hamilton Bulldogs 4-2 at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton on Friday night.

Connor Hellebuyck earned the victory with a 19-save performance in the IceCaps' final game before the holiday break.

Defenceman Mike Cornell opened the scoring for the IceCaps with 7:50 remaining in the first period as he snapped a quick shot from the point that eluded Bulldogs starter Dustin Tokarski high on the glove side for a power play goal.

T.J. Hensick evened the score with 3:37 remaining in the period as he threw an odd-angle shot on net against Hellebuyck and it beat him cleanly on the right side to tie the game.

With 17 seconds remaining in the first, the Bulldogs' struck again as former IceCap Maxime Macenauer snuck in on a breakaway and beat Hellebuyck low on the blocker side with a great deke to take a 2-1 lead into the intermission.

Jaffray tied the game at 9:13 of the second period as he took three whacks at the puck in front of Tokarski before finally sliding it beyond the goaltender's outstretched pad and over the goal line.

The IceCaps regained the lead with just over a minute remaining before the second intermission as Jaffray cut in on a partial breakaway against Tokarski. He was able to make the first save but kicked out a rebound and Carl Klingberg was able to flick a backhand shot along the ice and into the net.

Jaffray added his second of the night into the empty net in the final minute of play to seal the victory for St. John's, as the IceCaps limited the Bulldogs to just two shots in the third.

The IceCaps are now off for the holidays and will return to action again on New Year's Eve against the Manchester Monarchs at XL Center (8:30 p.m. NST).
