San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 19, 2014) - Ryan Martindale tied the game with 17.8 seconds left in regulation, and Alex Petrovic scored in the eighth round of a shootout to lift the San Antonio Rampage (16-8-2-0) to a 3-2 win over the Charlotte Checkers (10-15-2-1) on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Blake Parlett got the Rampage on the board at 8:24 of the second. Mark Mancari sent the puck to the low slot, and Parlett deflected it past Drew MacIntyre for the tally.
The Checkers tied the game at one midway through the third period when Trevor Carrick took a pass from Jordan Staal and scored. With a power-play opportunity late in the game, Chad LaRose beat Dan Ellis to give the Checkers a 2-1 lead. Ellis got a piece of LaRose's shot, but it trickled past him and over the goal line.
San Antonio pulled Ellis for the extra attacker with time winding down, and Martindale took a pass from Rocco Grimaldi and scored to send the game to overtime with the Rampage and Checkers locked at two.
Neither team would score in the extra frame, sending the game to a shootout, the fourth of the season for the Rampage. Petrovic's backhand goal in the skills competition stood as the only goal of the shootout and secured the 3-2 win for the Rampage.
San Antonio finished 0-for-3 on the power play and held Charlotte to one power play goal in four chances with the man advantage. Dan Ellis made 31 saves on 33 shots.
