Providence Bruins News Release
Providence, RI - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates, the Atlantic Division leaders, 4-2 on Friday evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The P-Bruins were led offensively by Trent Whitfield, Kirk MacDonald, Jordan Caron and Jeremy Reich.
Just 33 seconds into the first period, Providence got on the board when Whitfield scored his second goal of the year. From behind the net, Lane MacDermid fed Whitfield in the slot, who beat Jhonas Enroth with a snap shot. MacDonald also assisted on the play. Portland answered at the 9:19 mark as Providence was caught on a 3-on-1 and Marc-Andre Gragnani slid the puck through Nolan Schaefer's legs for a short-handed goal. Corey Tropp put the Pirates up by one with three minutes to play when he beat Schaefer over the shoulder with a wrist shot.
The second period opened with power play opportunities for both Providence and Portland, but neither team was able to capitalize on the man-advantage. The P-Bruins started to find their offensive momentum again halfway through the second, seeing opportunities from Joe Colborne and Colby Cohen. However, Providence didn't find the back of the net until 14:41 of the first. Whitfield collected the rebound from Matt Bartkowski's shot in the corner and fed a pass to MacDonald in the slot, who beat a sprawling Enroth with a one-timer to tie the game at two.
Providence continued to dominate offensively to open up the third period and Schaefer was able to withstand a Portland rush with some key saves. The P-Bruins took the lead at 7:48 when Zach Hamill passed the puck across the offensive zone to Jeff Penner at the right point. Penner sent a shot just wide of Enroth, but Caron was waiting back-door to tip it in for his sixth goal of the season. Providence kept Portland off the board for the remainder of the frame and secured the win with an empty-net goal from Reich with 15 seconds to play. Caron and Whitfield assisted on the goal.
Schaefer earned his ninth win, stopping 28 of 30 attempts. Enroth suffered the loss, blocking 29 of 32 shots. Both teams went scoreless on the power play, the P-Bruins in three tries and the Pirates in two.
Providence returns to action on Saturday at for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Sharks. The P-Bruins are next home next Friday against Springfield at 7:05 p.m. for Tote Bag Night, with tote bags free to the first 3,000 fans in attendance courtesy of Uncle Bob's Self Storage.
