Adirondack Phantoms News Release

The Phantoms unveiled their new mascot Dax to the local hockey faithful who entertained the fans and kids especially all throughout the evening. But the Phantoms couldn't come up with a victory in Dax' big debut as they fell to the Charlotte Checkers 2-1 Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Andrew Rowe (7th) scored for the Phantoms while Michael Leighton made 35 saves but a late power play goal by Jerome Samson with 4:16 left in regulation proved to be the difference for the former Albany River Rats.

After the energy line of Andrew Rowe, Rob Bordson and J.P. Testwuide scored three of the four goals in Wednesday's victory over Binghamton, they continued their scoring surge at the 11:56 mark of the first period. J.P. Testwuide kept a rolling puck in the Checkers zone, finding Rob Bordson down low. Bordson sent a cross-ice pass to Andrew Rowe who one-timed it past Checkers goaltender Mike Murphy to give Adirondack the 1-0 lead. It was Andrew Rowe's seventh goal of the season.

Michael Leighton was stellar in the first period as Charlotte outshot Adirondack 14-11. He ended up with 35 saves on 37 shots on the evening.

Adirondack held a 1-0 lead until Brad Herauf scored his second goal of the year at the 15:49 mark of the second period. Herauf put home a Michael Leighton rebound to tie the score at 1-1 on assists to Brett Sutter and Nicolas Blanchard.

In the third period with the score tied at 1-1, the Phantoms had opportunities to take the lead including a Denis Hamel shot that rang off the crossbar. Mike Murphy in the Charlotte cage held tough and also was bailed out by solid defense at the right times tying up Phantoms sticks when Murphy was in trouble.

Charlotte took a 2-1 lead on the power play with 4:16 remaining. Jerome Samson scored his team leading 23rd of the season on a shot from the top of the left circle that fluttered past a stretched Michael Leighton.

Adirondack went 0-for-4 on the power play while Charlotte went 1-for-4. Charlotte outshot Adirondack 37-33 in the game.

The Phantoms are 10-6-3 since December 17 and also sport a record of 8-6-3 under Head Coach Joe Paterson.

Next up, the Phantoms travel to Syracuse for their last game before the All-Star Break. Adirondack is 4-0 against the Crunch this season.

The AHL All-Star Skills Competition is Sunday in Hershey, PA and the All-Star Game takes place Monday night on AHLLive.com and locally on Time Warner Cable featuring Mike "Doc" Emrick on play-by-play.
