Syracuse Crunch News Release
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Crunch registered a season-high 47 shots on goal, but Ben Scrivens stopped 45 of those bids, helping Toronto to a 5-2 win tonight at The Oncenter War Memorial Arena.
Fabian Brunnstrom scored twice, including the game-winner and Greg Scott (1g, 1a), Matt Caruana (1g, 1a) and Simon Gysbers (0g, 2a) added two points each for Toronto. Patrick Maroon scored his third goal in four games while Dan Sexton added the Crunch's other tally. Timo Pielmeier took the loss in goal.
The Crunch came out hard and grabbed control of the game early, peppering to Toronto netminder with 17 first period shots. Scrivens was tough time and time again though, with his best save coming on 2-on-0 when he denied Maxime Macenauer with the left pad after he took a feed from Matt Beleskey about five minutes into the game.
Syracuse kept coming and finally broke through on the score sheet on the type of goal you wouldn't have expected Scrivens to give up given the way he was playing.
Nick Bonino hit Sexton with a long outlet pass down the right wing and Sexton used his speed to gain a half a step on his man. The Apple Valley, Minnesota native let go a wrister from a sharp angle that went off the glove of Scrivens and into the back of the net to put the Crunch up 1-0.
The Crunch remained in control and dominated almost the entire first period, until they experienced a letdown when Brunnstrom slipped the puck by an outstretched Pielmeier on a sharp angle to make it 1-1 with just four seconds left in the period after he corralled the rebound of Gyspers' point shot that clanged off the right post and came right to him.
Toronto carried the momentum from that late goal into the second stanza and went up 2-1 at the 4:43 mark when Caruana's turnaround rip from the top of the left circle beat Pielmeier over his left shoulder. The goal light originally did not come on, but after referee Marcus Vinnerborg huddled with linesmen Jeff Walker and Chris Woodworth, Toronto was awarded the goal when it was determined that the puck went through the netting.
Toronto struck again and went up 3-1 when Nazem Kadri found Mike Zigomanis who blasted it from the left side and Brunnstrom found the rebound in front and put it past Pielmeier for his second of the game at the 14:10 mark.
The Marlies' two-goal lead did not last long, as the Crunch had a quick answer and cut it to 3-2 just 46 seconds later when Nate Guenin found Maroon with a quick strike in front and Maroon snapped the disk past Scrivens low to the glove side.
That was as close as the Crunch would come, as Toronto clamped down defensively and then added third period goals from Scott at the 10:02 mark and Josh Engel at the 15:09 mark to make it a 5-2 final.
