Bruins Double Up Pirates

PROVIDENCE, RI - Trent Whitfield and Jordan Caron each scored a goal and an assist to lead the Providence Bruins to a 4-2 win over the Portland Pirates in an American Hockey League game played tonight at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.

Kirk MacDonald and Jeremy Reich also scored for the Bruins, who improved to 22-20-3-1 with the win.

Marc-Andre Gragnani and Corey Tropp scored for the Pirates while Derek Whitmore registered two assists. Mark Mancari also collected an assist to extend his point-scoring streak to 13 games (13-8-21). The Pirates saw their four-game winning streak end and are now 28-14-4-1.

The Bruins jumped out quickly in the game as Whitfield scored just 33 second in to give the home side a 1-0 advantage. The Pirates tied the game midway through the first as Gragnani connected shorthanded and then grabbed the lead with just under three minutes left in the first as Tropp stuffed one home to give Portland a 2-1 lead after one. MacDonald scored the lone goal in the second to send the two teams into the third tied at two. Caron scored what turned out to be the game winner seven minutes into the third before Reich hit the empty to complete the scoring.

The Bruins out shot the Pirates 33-30 in the game as Jhonas Enroth took the loss.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the Game were 1. MacDonald; 2. Whitfield and 3. Whitmore.

The Pirates wrap up weekend action tomorrow (Saturday) when they travel to Hartford to face off against the Connecticut Whale at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on 95.5 News Talk WLOB or on-line at www.portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 6:45 p.m.
