January 7, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Lethbridge, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings got a 45-save performance from Logan Cunningham as they knocked off the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday night at the Enmax Centre.
In the opening 20 minutes, the Oil Kings played an excellent road period as they took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Gavin Hodnett scored the lone tally of the period at the 10:56 mark after he smacked home a loose puck in front of the Hurricane net for his seventh goal of the season. Oil Kings defenceman Parker Alcos recorded his first career WHL point on the play after picking up the primary assist.
The Hurricanes weren't without their chances in the first period as they fired 14 shots the way of Edmonton netminder Logan Cunningham, with their best two opportunities coming from Tristan Zandee and Logan McCutcheon that were both denied by sprawling saves.
In the second period, the 'Canes fired 14 more pucks the way of Cunningham but once again the Edmonton goaltender stood tall making all the required stops.
The Oil Kings had several good looks on Lethbridge goaltender Bryan Thomson but were unable to find an insurance marker, settling for a 1-0 lead at the second intermission.
In the third period, the Hurricanes scored twice to take a 2-1 lead thanks to goals from Blake Swetlikoff and Logan Wormald.
Swetlikoff levelled the score 4:30 into the third after he converted on a 2-on-1 rush with Cole Shepard.
Wormald gave the 'Canes the lead with just over seven minutes left in the game after burying a rebound on a Lethbridge power play.
With just three minutes left in regulation, former Hurricane Cole Miller tied the game once again as he was able to bat home a rebound in the left-circle of the Lethbridge zone after Thomson made a blocker save on Rhett Melnyk.
In overtime, both teams had their looks but neither Cunningham or Thomson would yield the game-winning goal sending the two clubs to a shootout.
In the shootout, Luca Hauf and Hodnett would score on Edmonton's first two shots and Cunningham denied Noah Chadwick and Tyson Zimmer on Lethbridge's two shots to give the Oil Kings the 3-2 victory.
Cunningham made 45 saves for the Oil Kings for his first career WHL win, while Thomson turned in 29 stops for the Hurricanes. The Oil Kings went 0-for-2 on the power play, the Hurricanes were 1-for-4.
