Spokane Chiefs News Release

Spokane, Wash. - The Spokane Chiefs cleaned up their penalty kill, successfully shutting down all five of Vancouver's man advantages, but ultimately fell short Saturday night against the Giants, 2-1.

It was a much closer affair than the last contest between these two teams, with the Chiefs holding off the Giants until over halfway through the first period when Jaden Lipinski got Vancouver on the board at 12:19.

Vancouver added another at 8:24 in the second after Spokane netminder Dawson Cowan made a save, but a backchecking Grady Lane crashed into the net, leading to Ethan Semeniuk picking up his seventh goal of the season to make it 2-0.

After posting 23 shots through the first two periods, the Chiefs finally found the back of the net when Chase Bertholet cruised up the ice and swept the puck by a Vancouver defender on his way to the slot, where he fired it into the twine to bring Spokane within one at 5:30 in the third. Cade Hayes and Nathan Mayes earned the assists on the play, marking Mayes' first Western Hockey League career point.

But that's as close as the Chiefs would get, as the rest of the game went by without a goal from either side.

Spokane's special teams showed a bit of improvement tonight by going a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill, but 0-for-3 on the power play.

Dawson Cowan started for the Chiefs and stopped 27-of-29 shots faced in his 58:19 in net.

Up next, Spokane will host the Everett Silvertips on Wednesday, January 11 in the third matchup of the year between the two teams.
