Oil Kings Bolster Roster at 2011 WHL Bantam Draft

Calgary, AB - The 2011 WHL Bantam Draft is officially in the books, and in total the Oil Kings added 10 players to their roster. Assistant General Manager and director of Player personnel Randy Hansch is pleased with the quality of players the Oil Kings were able to add.

"It was a great day for our organization. We're very pleased with all of our selections. We didn't have the luxury of having two picks in the first round to take a forward and a defencemen but we felt we got the best player available in Aaron and later on we were able to add some size and strength up the middle and three of our defencemen chosen happened to have right handed shots which is harder to come by these days."

The Oil Kings started out the draft with the ninth overall pick, selecting local defenceman Aaron Irving from the South Side Athletic Club Southgate Lions. The 15 year old was brings a solid all around game to the ice.

"He brings good size, moves very well and competes on all areas of the ice. Aaron is a solid defenceman who can contribute," said Hansch.

Also included in the new batch of Oil Kings are three players from the Pursuit of Excellence hockey program including third rounder Dysin Mayo, sixth rounder Logan Mick and seventh rounder Mitch Meek. That's the same hockey program that produced Oil Kings top prospect and former first round draft pick Curtis Lazar.

Edmonton Oilers and Hockey Night in Canada fans will recognize the sixth round draft pick. Forward Riley Simpson is the son of former Oiler and current broadcaster Craig Simpson.

The 10 new players won't have to wait long for their first taste of life the WHL. The Oil Kings will host their annual Spring Development camp from May 26th - 29th at the NAIT arena.
