Manchester Monarchs News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - Right wing Teddy Purcell tallied on the power play to carry the Manchester Monarchs past the Rochester Americans, 4-2, in front of 3,397 fans at the Blue Cross Arena on Friday night.
Manchester (5-6-0-3) picked up their second consecutive road win to move into a tie for sixth place in the Atlantic Division with 13 points. Rochester (2-15-0-1) is ranked seventh in the North Division with five points.
Purcell scored his team leading sixth goal of the season at 2:33 of the final stanza to give the Monarchs the 3-2 lead. Skating on the power play, center Gabe Gauthier cycled the puck to defenseman Andrew Campbell at the left point. Campbell found Purcell at the bottom of the left face-off circle. The second year right winger shuffled the puck on the ice and wristed a shot that slid between goaltender David Shantz's legs for the go-ahead goal.
Coming off three assists in his professional debut on Wednesday, center Justin Azevedo added his first goal of the season with a power play tally at 2:45 of the opening period. With Rochester skating with two men in the penalty box, the Monarchs put on the pressure. Campbell sent a shot in on netminder Chris Beckford-Tseu. Traveling through traffic, the puck bounced to the bottom of the left face-off circle and to the stick of Purcell. The Monarchs leading goal scorer got a shot off that Beckford-Tseu saved. Left wing Matt Moulson tried to get a rebound shot off but the puck bounced off of bodies and sticks and over to Azevedo at the bottom of the right face-off circle. Azevedo tossed the puck into the wide open net for the early 1-0 lead.
Manchester doubled their lead at 14:33 of the first frame with defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov's second goal in as many games and third tally of the season. Moulson sent the puck into the Americans' zone and Gauthier picked it up along the right wing boards about halfway into the zone. Gauthier turned and fed the puck to Voynov at the right point for the one-timer. The puck knuckled through the air and over Beckford-Tseu's right shoulder for the 2-0 lead.
Beckford-Tseu left the crease following the Monarchs' second goal after stopping 16-of-18 shots in 14 minutes and 31 seconds of playing time. Shantz took over for Beckford-Tseu and stopped the two shots he faced the remainder of the first period.
A physical first period saw Manchester left wing Paul Crosty drop the gloves with Rochester's left wing Riley Emmerson and then Monarchs center Denny Johnston scuffled with Americans' left wing Tanner Glass. Monarchs' left wing Richard Clune was taken down by three Americans at center ice shortly before the Johnston-Glass fight and was assisted off the ice by Manchester's Athletic Trainer Mike Muir with what appeared to be a lower body injury. Clune did not return to the game.
The Americans responded in the second period with two goals to tie the game at 2-2. Center David Brine put Rochester on the board first with his second tally of the season at 13:39 of the middle frame. The puck was sent into the Monarchs zone along the left wing boards. University of New Hampshire graduate left wing Jacob Micflikier controlled the puck along the boards and sent it behind the net to right wing Dan Collins. Flipping the puck toward the crease, Brine got his stick on Collins' pass in mid-stride and tipped it between Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Quick and the right post for the goal.
Collins picked up his second point on the night with his first goal of the season. Glass carried the puck into Manchester's zone and sent it down to Collins at the bottom of the right face-off circle. Collins snapped a wrist shot into the crease that bounced off of a Monarchs defenseman and into the net at 15:52 of the second period.
As the Monarchs skated shorthanded with less than a minute left in the game, Campbell cleared the puck down the ice and into the empty net to finish off the Americans at 19:09 of the third period. Quick picked up his first assist of the season on the insurance goal.
Quick (2-5-1) earned his second win of the season stopping 21-of-23 shots. Beckford-Tseu (2-8-1) stopped 16 shots in the first period before being replaced by Shantz (0-2-0) who was credited with the loss after making 18 saves in just over two periods of play.
Manchester went 2-for-8 on the power play. Rochester was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
