Griffins vs. Sled Wings Sled Hockey Game

Tue., Dec. 9, 2008 at 7 p.m. (Doors open at 6 p.m.)

Griff's IceHouse

In one of the most unique events anywhere involving a professional sports team, the Griffins each season play a friendly but spirited game of sled hockey against the Grand Rapids Sled Wings, a talented team of physically challenged teenagers sponsored by the Griffins Youth Foundation in partnership with Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital.

This season's fourth-annual game is set for Tuesday, Dec. 9 at Griff's IceHouse (30 Coldbrook NE), with the Griffins looking to avenge last season's gut-wrenching 4-3 defeat to the Sled Wings.

Tickets will be available at the door that night for just $5 (free to children 2 and under). From 6-7 p.m., try out a sled on the ice for a $1 donation, challenge a Griffins player to a game of bubble hockey or air hockey for a $3 donation, or take part in a free autograph session with Griffins players. Faceoff is at 7 p.m.

The Great Skate Winterfest

Sat., Jan. 10, 2009 at Noon through 10 p.m. on Sun., Jan. 11, 2009

Rosa Parks Circle

The Great Skate debuted in 2002 as a 24-hour ice skating marathon held at the outdoor Rosa Parks Circle ice rink in downtown Grand Rapids, with every Griffins player and coach skating for at least one hour around the clock with fans.

New for 2009, the seventh-annual event expands into a two-day Winterfest, kicking off on Saturday, Jan. 10 at noon with skating, winter sports demonstrations, games and activities as part of a celebration of winter in our city. Businesses and local organizations such as the John Ball Zoo, the Grand Rapids Children's Museum, Ice Sculptures Limited and Burton Snowboards will all take part in this family-friendly event, which is presented by Comcast.

The festival will conclude with the traditional Great Skate, which will start at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 - immediately following the Griffins' game against Philadelphia at Van Andel Arena - and conclude at 10 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11.

Admission to the Great Skate Winterfest is free but donations are encouraged.

Proceeds from both events benefit the Griffins Youth Foundation.

Sponsorships are available by calling (616) 774-4585 ext. 3027.
