Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY - Mike Angelidis scored two goals and Justin Peters made 28 saves as the Albany River Rats beat the Syracuse Crunch 5-3 Friday night for their first win of the season at the Times Union Center.

Both teams entered tonight's game hungry for a win following Wednesday night losses. The Crunch out-shot Albany 9-6 in the first period and had the frame's best scoring opportunity on a five-on-three power play at 15:59. However, in his third consecutive start for the Rats, goaltender Justin Peters kept the Crunch off the board and the teams headed to the locker rooms in a scoreless tie.

Albany broke through for the game's first goal with a power play tally from Jerome Samson at 9:25 of the second period. Samson collected a rebound from a Dan LaCouture shot at the side of the net and quickly fired the puck passed Syracuse's Sebastian Dahm; LaCouture and Brett Carson recorded assists on the red-hot winger's fifth goal of the season. The Crunch out-shot Albany 10-7 in the period, but Peters continued his strong play and the Rats took the 1-0 lead into the third.

The River Rats defended their one goal lead through most of the third and at 14:21 Mike Angelidis gave his club a two goal cushion. From behind the net Nicolas Blanchard fed Angelidis in the low slot and from point-blank range he picked his spot and buried his chance; Pat Dwyer also recorded an assist on the play. The Crunch pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and with 66 seconds remaining Kris Russell scored to cut the lead to 2-1 and spoil Peters' shut-out bid. Syracuse continued to pressure Albany through the final minute of play, but with 2.4 seconds to go Angelidis shot the puck into the empty net for his second goal of the night to seal the win for Albany.

River Rats net-minder Justin Peters was outstanding in goal for the River Rats, finishing the game with 28 saves on 29 shots to earn his second win as Albany improved to 4-9-2-1 on the season. Syracuse goalie Sebastian Dahm stopped 18-of-20 shots and took the loss as the Crunch fell to 12-5-0-1. Syracuse out-shot the River Rats 29-21 and went 0-for-5 on the power play; Albany went 1-for-4 with the man-advantage.
