July 13, 2022 - International League (IL)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Omaha Storm Chasers (43-42) took down the Rochester Red Wings (45-41) 6-1 for the first time since the 1990s as the series is now tied 1-1.
Left fielder Dairon Blanco hit an infield single with two away in the first before moving to second on his 21st stolen base of the season, entering the game tied for fourth in the International League in stolen bases. Blanco would end up stranded at second to end the first.
To start the second inning, right fielder John Rave hit a double into center field before second baseman Gabriel Cancel drew a walk to put a pair of runners on with nobody out in the second. Eaton was picked off before a groundout ended the inning for the Storm Chasers.
In just his second game with Omaha, center fielder Drew Waters hit a one-out single, the third consecutive inning that the Chasers recorded a hit. Omaha again came up empty in the frame, leaving the scoreboard still.
A bases loaded walk, 23 outs into the game, opened the scoring for the Red Wings in the bottom of the fourth.
First baseman Angelo Castellano hit a double that started a rally in the fifth that gave Omaha its first lead over Rochester in over 30 years. Designated hitter William Hancock hit a single that would score Castellano and knot the score. Shortstop Iván Castillo started a streak of four batters reaching with a walk, all without putting the ball in play. Blanco walked to load the bases before Briceño was hit by a pitch to put the Chasers in front. Rave drew another bases loaded walk to put the Chasers up 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth.
Right-hander Ándres Núñez (Win, 4-1) came in and pitched the fifth and sixth, extending his scoreless streak to 22.1 innings. The streak is the longest by a Storm Chaser this season, surpassing RHP Brad Peacock's 20.0-inning scoreless streak. He is now in sole possession of most consecutive games without allowing an earned run in the International League at 19 games.
Briceño hit a ground rule double that made its way onto the first base berm to start the eighth. Rave hit a single that scored Briceño and extend their lead to three runs before stealing second base and moving to third on a Rochester throwing error. Cancel would draw a walk before getting doubled up on a play that was lined out to the shortstop. The Chasers would strand Rave and leave the score at 4-1.
In the top of the ninth, Hancock started the inning on first base after a fielding error before Waters hit a double to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Castillo singled to score another run before Blanco hit a sacrifice fly to push the score to 6-1 in favor of Omaha heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Omaha takes on Rochester Thursday for game three of the six-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT with coverage starting at 5:45 p.m. on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone. Tomorrow's probable for the Storm Chasers is left-hander Drew Parrish (1-3, 6.35) while the Red Wings send right-hander Cory Abbott to the mound.
Omaha returns home for a four-game series after the MLB All-Star break for a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs from July 22-55. The series will include Marvel's Defenders of the Diamond on July 22.
