Iowa Cubs News Release
IOWA CUBS (38-46) vs. BUFFALO BISONS (43-42)
Wednesday - 6:38 PM - Principal Park - Des Moines, IA
RHP Cam Sanders (1-4, 5.36) vs. LHP Derek Holland (0-1, 4.32)
TONIGHT'S GAME: Iowa and Buffalo are scheduled for game two of their six-game series tonight, with Iowa currently holding a 1-0 series lead. Cam Sanders will take the ball for the I-Cubs trying to make it two wins in a row for the team and for himself. The righty earned his first win at the Triple-A level last time out, putting him at 1-4 with a 5.36 ERA through his first 10 games with Iowa. Sanders has allowed 24 earned runs on 33 hits in 40.1 innings, striking out 34 batters compared to 25 walks. Opposite of Sanders will be southpaw Derek Holland. Holland is 0-1 with a 4.32 ERA in 18 games including five starts with Buffalo. The lefty started the year with Triple-A Worcester where he made 10 relief appearances and went 0-2 with a 6.35 ERA. He was released on May 1 and signed to a minor league contract by Toronto on May 5. The 35-year-old has allowed 12 earned runs on 23 hits over 25.0 innings with Buffalo, striking out 22 batters compared to 11 walks.
DOING HIS THING: After a rare 0-for-4 performance in Sunday's loss to Indianapolis, Dixon Machado answered with a 3-for-4 game last night. From the top of the lineup, the shortstop went 3-for-4 with a double, four runs batted in and a walk. It marked his 68th game leading off for Iowa this year, setting the table for Iowa now in 81% (68-of-84) of their games. The 30-year-old grew his lead in many different categories last night, leading the way for Iowa in multi-hit games (21), games played (74), hits (86), doubles (15) and walks (43). He ranks seventh in batting average (.298), fifth in on-base percentage (.394) and tied for seventh in hits (86) among all International League Players, while his 86 hits have him sitting tied for eighth in all of Triple-A.
PUT ONE IN THE BOOKS: Cam Sanders made his ninth start of the year for Iowa last Thursday against Indianapolis, tossing five innings of two-run ball. The righty allowed just three hits and three walks while also striking out three. More importantly, he earned his first win at the Triple-A level. Sanders was 0-4 entering that game, but his five innings and six runs of support from the offense was enough to get him his first win. The 25-year-old now has a career record of 15-18 with an ERA of 4.21 in 71 Minor League games.
GROWING THEIR LEAD: Nearly every team leader Iowa has for their hitting statistics grew their lead in last night's 8-2 win over Buffalo. Dixon Machado increased his lead in games played (74), hits (86), doubles (15) and walks (43) while Jared Young increased his lead in home runs (14) and runs batted in (44). Machado and Young were both leading in each respective category entering last night's contest, but with their collective efforts in the win, they grew the lead over their teammates.
ALL TOO FAMILIAR: Last series against Columbus, Iowa won the first game by a score of 7-2, similar to their 8-2 victory last night. In the following five games, the I-Cubs were outscored 60-25 and dropped all five contests. They allowed double-digit runs in four straight games while surrendering nine in the finale.
HOLD THEM TO ONE: Iowa's pitching staff has been doing their part over the last week, allowing two or less runs in four of their last seven games. In each of their last three games, the staff has combined to surrender just one earned run in each game. A 10-1 win on Saturday, a 2-0 loss on Sunday and an 8-2 victory in last night's game, with just one earned run in each scenario. Over the three games, the 11 different pitchers have combined to allow just the three earned runs on 19 total hits and five total walks while striking out 35 batters. All 11 pitchers have struck out at least one batter, while 10 of the 11 have struck out two or more and five of the 11 have struck out three or more.
LOCKED IN: After struggling mightily through their last home series against Columbus, Iowa's bullpen has been lights-out over their last seven games. The group didn't fare well against the Clippers, giving up 39 earned runs in 34.1 innings for an ERA of 10.22 on the week. They walked 31 men compared to 27 strikeouts and surrendered eight home runs in the six-game set. The relievers turned it around in a big way in Indianapolis, however. In the I-Cubs' last seven games, the bullpen has covered 31.1 innings and allowed only three earned runs, good for an ERA of 0.86. The group has issued just seven walks and one home run while striking out 48 batters during that span.
AGAINST BUFFALO: Iowa and Buffalo will meet for game two of their six-game series at Principal Park tonight, with Iowa currently holding a 1-0 lead after their 8-2 win last night. With the victory, Iowa is now just one game below the .500 mark against the Bisons this year, at 3-4. They moved to 1-0 at Principal Park this year and 61-43 all-time at home against Buffalo, while going 111-104 overall all-time against the Bisons. Through the first seven games the two teams have played, Iowa is down one game in the series but leads the season scoring 25-22.
SHORT HOPS: Last night marked Iowa's first home win in the month of July and moved them to 4-6 in the month...tonight will be Iowa's first Wednesday night game at Principal Park this year...Frank Schwindel became the 20th player to homer for Iowa this season with his solo blast last night.
