Buffalo Bisons News Release
DES MOINES, IA - After dropping the opener last night, the Buffalo Bisons bounced back with an 8-4 win over the Iowa Cubs on Wednesday night from Principal Park.
Making his Buffalo debut in this one was infielder Colton Shaver, who went 1-4 and started at first after signing with the Blue Jays organization as a minor league free agent yesterday. Shaver had been playing for the Lancaster Barnstormers of the Atlantic League where he hit .266 with an .849 OPS and 11 homers in 68 games.
Despite an early two-run homer by Narciso Crook hit off Derek Holland in the second, a big five run inning in the fourth that saw 10 Bisons step up to the plate put the Herd out in front for good.
The inning was capitalized with a bases-clearing three-run triple by Logan Warmoth which knocked out Iowa starter Cam Sanders after 3.2 innings. Sanders did strike out seven batters, but walked five and was charged with all five runs.
Brandon Eisert took over for Holland in the third and threw two perfect innings, before Joe Biagini allowed one run over his two innings of work.
The I-Cubs inched closer in the seventh off Dixon Machado's sixth RBI of the series to cut the Herd's lead to one, but a big two-run homer by Cullen Large in the eighth brought the lead up to three. Chavez Young would then add another insurance run off a wild pitch to make it 8-4 Bisons.
Eric Yardley had a clean bottom of the eighth before Trent Thornton retired the side in the ninth to secure the win and put the Bisons on the board in the series.
The Bisons and I-Cubs will continue their series tomorrow evening, with first pitch set for 7:38 p.m. EST.
