LAST TIME OUT
MOOSIC, PA (July 12, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (41-44) defeated the Louisville Bats 11-2 on Tuesday evening. Josh Breaux went 3-for-5 with his first career Triple-A home run.
The RailRiders took the game's first lead in the second on a defensive miscue after Ronald Guzmán singled to right-center with two outs and a runner on. Derek Dietrich scored all the way from first on the play following a missed-catch error by third baseman Max Schrock to give SWB a 1-0 advantage.
Louisville tied the game at one apiece in the top of the third with a Jose Barrero run-scoring double against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre starter Clarke Schmidt. The 26-year-old Schmidt allowed that lone tally over 4.2 innings with six strikeouts in his fourth appearance with SWB this season. The RailRiders broke the tie a half-inning later courtesy of a four-run third. Oswaldo Cabrera launched a two-run big fly to right in his first appearance with SWB since May 8. Greg Bird brought home another tally with an opposite-field single and Armando Alvarez put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre ahead 5-1 on a sacrifice fly. The Bats scratched a run off the lead against MLB-rehabber Jonathan Loáisiga in the sixth. Colin Moran hit an RBI double to right-center to get Louisville within 5-2. Loáisiga gave up one run on three hits over one frame of work in the second appearance of his Minor League rehab assignment. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre got that one back in the seventh via Alvarez's second run batted in of the night to make it 6-2.
The RailRiders scored five insurance runs in the eighth. Miguel Andújar drove the first two in with a single to left as part of a 3-for-5 night for him. Josh Breaux and Jake Bauers then became the first RailRiders' this season to hit back-to-back home runs and plated the final three in the 11-2 final.
NEWS & NOTES
FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome the Louisville bats for their first trip to PNC Field since July 19-21, 2019 (Louisville won series 2-1). The Bats are just the second western division team the RailRiders have faced this year, the other being the Toledo Mud Hens (split series 3-3 in Ohio).
SEVENTH HEAVEN - With yesterday's win and Norfolk's loss, the RailRiders find themselves tied for seventh place. They had been in eighth place or lower in the International League East from May 1 to July 12 (72 days). They look to move to two games under .500 for the first time since April 29 after game one of a doubleheader against Lehigh Valley when they were 9-11.
100 - The RailRiders picked up their 100th franchise win over the Louisville Bats on Tuesday. It took them 179 games to accomplish the feat.
WHERE THE HEART IS - The RailRiders enter Wednesday with nine straight home wins under their belts. This is their longest home winning streak since the RailRiders won eleven straight from July 22 to August 10, 2016. The longest home winning streak in franchise history lasted fourteen games from May 22 to June 11, 1992.
BUY ONE, GET ONE - The RailRiders hit back-to-back homers on Tuesday thanks to Josh Breaux and Jake Bauers. It was the first time this season any RailRider batters were able to complete the feat. The last time the RailRiders hit back-to-back homers was from Donny Sands and Armando Alvarez on July 20, 2021 against Rochester.
COMO LA FLOR - Estevan Florial's eleven-game hitting streak came to an end yesterday. It was the third eleven-game hitting streak of his career, his second this season and matches his career best. He continues to carry a twelve-game on-base streak. His longest this season is fifteen, which lasted from April 24 to May 15.
BREAUX-MANCE - Josh Breaux joined the RailRiders from Double-A Somerset on July 2 and has gone nine for his first thirteen with three RBI, a triple, home run and a pair of walks. When Breaux left Somerset, he was batting just .204 in 53 games. He enters tonight's game with three straight three-hit games
BAUERS POWER - After hitting one home run with the RailRiders in his first 19 games, Jake Bauers has hit three over the course of his last four games. His slugging percentage has jumped fifty points in that span (.297 to .347). Bauers is slashing .296/.457/.667 in July. His homer on Tuesday came against the Bats, whom he has played before but was the first time he had seen them since being traded to the Yankees by the Reds. Bauers played 29 games with Louisville earlier this season.
BACK WITH A VENGEANCE -Infielder Oswaldo Cabrera returned to the RailRiders last night after spending 65 days away from the team with a right shoulder injury. After his first plate appearance resulted in a hit by pitch, Cabrera launched a two-run homer to give SWB the lead in the third inning. In 22 games with the RailRiders to begin the season, he hit just one homer. Including his rehab stint with the Tampa Tarpons, Cabrera has homered in back-to-back games (on Sunday).
ON DECK - The RailRiders square off with Louisville tomorrow. Thursday is Thirsty Thursday. Enjoy $1.00 specials on Bud Light and Pepsi products for two hours after gates open, presented by Budweiser and Eyewitness News.
STREAKY -Greg Weissert has not been charged with a run in eleven straight appearances, the longest stretch for any RailRiders pitcher this season... Shane Greene and Jimmy Cordero are on four-game scoreless streaks... Phillip Evans is on a five-game hit streak and a seven-game on-base streak...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (61-26) dropped the opener to the Reds yesterday 4-3. Gerrit Cole fanned 11 in seven shutout innings. The Yanks look to even the series tonight with Luis Severino taking on Mike Minor at 7:05 PM... The Somerset Patriots (50-32) lost in walkoff fashion to the Portland Sea Dogs 10-8 last night. Blake Perkins tied the game with a two-run double with two outs in the ninth before losing in the bottom of the inning. Will Warren starts tonight at 6:00 PM...
