
Jumbo Shrimp Fall in Slugfest with Mets

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - In a game that saw eight home runs between Jacksonville and Syracuse, the most combined in any game this season, the Jumbo Shrimp fell to the Mets 11-6 on Wednesday at NBT Bank Stadium.
With the score tied at three, Syracuse (38-48) exploded for a four-run second inning to retake the lead. With one out, Nick Plummer reached on an error and Francisco Álvarez walked. Plummer was picked off second but Daniel Palka singled, advancing Álvarez to second. Mark Vientos (16) smacked a three-run home run off Jacksonville (46-40) starter Matthew Kent (L, 4-7) in the ensuing at-bat to put the Mets ahead 6-3. Travis Blankenhorn (12) clubbed a solo home run as the Mets went back-to-back to make it a 7-3 game.
The Jumbo Shrimp started their climb back in the third inning. Willians Astudillo (8) led off the inning with a solo home run to cut the Syracuse lead to 7-4.
Two innings later, Jacksonville continued to battle back into the game. Lewin Díaz led off with a walk and two batters later, JJ Bleday (19) blasted a two-run home run to bring the Jumbo Shrimp to within one, 7-6.
In the fifth inning, Khalil Lee (7) blasted a solo home run to increase the Mets' lead to 8-6.
The Mets put the nail in the coffin in the bottom of the eighth with three more runs. Lee blasted a solo home run, his second of the day, off Jacksonville reliever Aneurys Zabala as Syracuse pushed their lead to 9-6. Two batters later, Deven Marrero walked and went to second on a single from Johneshwy Fargas. With runners at first and second, Plummer singled, scoring Marrero and pushing Fargas went to third. With runners at the corners, a wild pitch scored Fargas to put the Mets ahead 11-6.
Syracuse was able to take an early lead against the Jumbo Shrimp right away in the bottom of the first. With Álvarez on first, Palka singled and Vientos followed with another single, scoring Álvarez from second to put Syracuse ahead 1-0. With runners at first and second, Blankenhorn smacked the third consecutive single of the inning, which scored Palka. With the Mets ahead 2-0, Lee singled to load the bases and Vientos scored from third on a groundout from Jose Colina to give Syracuse a 3-0 lead.
Jacksonville responded right away in the top of the second. Bleday was hit by a pitch before Charles Leblanc (13) blasted a two-run home run, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Two batters later, Ryan Lavarnway (8) smacked a solo home run to tie the game at three.
Jacksonville will turn to RHP Bryan Hoeing (6-4, 5.22) and RHP Jacob DeGrom (0-0, 0.00) will make a rehab start for Syracuse in Thursday's 6:35 p.m. contest. Coverage begins at 6:20 p.m. ET on ESPN 690 and espn690.com.
