Norfolk Tides News Release

The Tides were shutout by the Charlotte Knights, 4-0, tonight. Norfolk could muster only three hits, just the fifth time this season they've recorded three hits or less.

The first run of the game wasn't scored until the bottom of the third inning, when Tim Beckham hit a two-out home run to give the Knights their first run. They also scratched across a run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Marco Hernández hit an RBI single to score Luis González and made it a 2-0 game.

Knights' starter Jimmy Lambert was in full control, allowing only two hits, three walks and a hit batter spread across 5.2 innings, striking out a season-high eight batters. It was his first game with at least eight punchouts since May 29, 2019 (nine). He retired the last seven batters and was relieved at 78 pitches, his second-lowest thrown this year.

Kyle Bradish went 5.0 strong innings, making one mistake with a hanging curve against Beckham in the third and his tough inning in the fourth where he walked two and allowed a hit. He finished with five strikeouts. He's struck out at least five hitters in five of his last six starts.

The Knights scored another insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to go up, 3-0, when Tides reliever Evan Phillips balked in a run to score Hernández, who reached on an error. Phillips threw 2.0 innings and allowed that one unearned run on one hit and no walks while striking out a season-high four batters in relief.

Charlotte grabbed one last run in the bottom of the eighth when Matt Reynolds walked and then scored on a double by González. They finished off Norfolk in the ninth to shutout the Tides, 4-0. It's the fifth time they've been shutout this season, the last time coming on June 19 vs. Durham.

Saturday night will feature Tides' starter LHP Kevin Smith (0-1, 5.00) against Charlotte starter RHP Reynaldo López (0-5, 8.19). First pitch at 7:04 p.m.
