Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Left-hander Marcelo Martinez struck out seven in 5.2 innings of one-run ball to lead the Omaha Storm Chasers to a 6-1 win over the St. Paul Saints on Thursday at CHS Field. The win snapped the Chasers' losing streak at three games.
Martinez (Win, 1-1), making his third career Triple-A start, did not allow a run until the sixth inning, holding St. Paul (23-27) to four baserunners through the first five innings. He yielded a solo home run to Drew Maggi in the sixth inning before striking out Mark Contreras to end hit outing. In addition to collecting seven strikeouts, Martinez did not walk a batter, allowing just five total hits.
The Omaha (33-17) offense supported Martinez, scoring five runs in the first two innings against right-hander Michael Pineda (Loss, 0-1), who was making a rehab appearance. Left fielder Rudy Martin, who made his 2021 Triple-A debut, double off the right-center field fence in his first at-bat, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman Ryan McBroom to give the Chasers and 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The Chasers scored four runs on three hits, one error, and one walk in the second inning. After centerfielder Bubba Starling led off with an infield since and catcher Meibrys Viloria walked, second baseman Alcides Escobar reached on an error to load the bases with zero outs. Next, right fielder Anderson Miller slapped a two-run, automatic double down the left-field line to bring in Starling and Viloria. Escobar and Miller scored on a two-run single down the right-field line by shortstop Erick Mejia to put Omaha in front, 5-0.
Mejia added a run in the eighth, lifting a solo home run over the right-field fence for his second home run of the season.
Right hander Eddie Butler, right hander Tyler Zuber, left-hander Gabe Speier, and right hander Domingo Tapia combined for 3.1 scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts and one walk. Overall, the Omaha pitching staff held St. Paul 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners on base.
The Storm Chasers continue their series with the St. Paul Saints on Friday at CHS Field in St. Paul, Minn., when left-hander Daniel Lynch (4-1, 4.24) faces St. Paul left-hander Charlie Barnes (3-2, 3.94). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. with the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m. on 1180 The Zone.
After the series in St. Paul, the Omaha Storm Chasers return to Werner Park on Tuesday, July 6, to begin a six-game series against the Toledo Mud Hens that features special FNBO Summer Fireworks Series shows on July 8 and July 10 and an Adalberto Mondesi bobblehead giveaway on July 9.
